A Lake Effect MMP

Beef on weck ./drooooool

Mornin’, y’all. Caffeine #1 down; I’m gonna post before foraging.

I took pictures of the local fire last night, but I didn’t get them to Photobucket yet because of yet another fire page. The whole county is skittish now, and 3 different controlled burns or smolders from Sunday were called in. Mine was one of the controlled burns.

Last night, I went to the post-mortem meeting on the Sunday fires. We had 9 fires total, covering 400 acres; 3 of the fires were never worked. Acorn Hill was the biggest, consuming 300 acres. Arson or stupidity were the cause of 7. No structures were lost at Acorn Hill, and only 2 vehicles were lost.

One single wide trailer was lost elsewhere, a towing trailer, and 8 wrecked cars in a junkyard of 50. No one was injured.

My county has had several small plane crashes (none since I moved there), one Navy helicopter to crash land a few years ago, and a few hurricanes and tornadoes. This fire was the biggest non-weather disaster in about 50 years, the previous being a train wreck with oil fire that was geographically close to my house. The rail line is history now.

There are 6 forestry plows in the district we are in, and we got 3 of them into Gates County. The forestry district covers 9 counties. That’s one of the reasons the fire in Camden County to the east is still going. Every county along the coast, and up to 100 miles inland, had at least 1 wildfire Sunday. Had the Acorn Hill fire jumped the road into the field, it would have gone into the Dismal Swamp, and we’d still be there today, much like Camden County is now.

The bad news today is the forecast calls for 20 MPH sustained winds. The good news is a 50/50 chance of rain.

Phew. Off to find my morning bacon and eggs.

I’m not following that thread, but I always heard that it was because of one or the other (men or women) had people dress them, and the subsequent button placement helped to make it easier for someone not wearing the item of clothing to do them up.

Went and voted in our primary today. It was pretty dead at the polling place.

I am reading a few books to write up reviews. I finished David Cassidy’s autobiography over the weekend. I like him even less now. He was such a tool. I’m in the middle of the one on Joe Strummer, Redemption Song. I like that much better, but Strummer could be a bit of a dick too.

Bob the fires made it as a small story on NPR this morning. They reported two people have been arrested already for arson. 5 more arrests to go, I guess.

I told the sheriff and the emergency management director (also the fire marshall) what I knew about the Acorn Hill fire, and what the doper said. They were interested, and I can’t say more.

I also asked about the old couple and the murdered daughter, and got the thumbnail story. She married a preacher from Virginia Beach, who wound up killing her and dumping her body on our side of the state line. It was a pretty obvious case against him and a quick trial. I don’t know any more detail than that, but it satisfied my curiosity.

An interesting tidbit I didn’t know until last night. I knew that as an emergency worker, I have as much power and legal weight directing traffic as a cop; what I didn’t know is that I have arrest powers, too, if someone tries to run the roadblock or assaults us. That would have come in handy when 6 cars were waiting, and we had a near riot on our hands. We called for law enforcement twice to back us up, and never got it.

Morning all!

Shadow, that first sweater you were knitting looks lovely. But yeah, clothes that look nice on their own aren’t much good unless they look nice on actual people.

Dotty, those boots are cute! BooFae’s boots, on the other hand, look positively evil. Talk about CFM boots!

Nava, my brother can’t sponsor me because he doesn’t earn a large enough income. Plus sibling sponsorship takes years. Like, probably over ten. I’d probably already have some kind of stable situation by then. (Hopefully!)

Get better soon, kai!

I really like the first sweater you were knitting–but I’d do it in blues and grays or greens. (I wouldn’t do it in anything–I can barely do the knit stitch).

Those boots are skeery, BooFae! I would definitely do whatever you say when you have them on…

Dotty-I must be caving into stereotypes, but where does one wear those boots in Sand Central? I don’t picture you in a burkha or anything, but aren’t they a bit hot for the desert?

<looks down at her loafers and has both sighs of regret and relief>

Today at the library a new assignment awaits me. Joy. (I like the work, but I don’t like the not getting paid and the fact that it takes my time away from me).

It’s 10 degrees out.

Morning everybody!

Just a quick driveby - I’ve been here at work since 6:00. My engineer is going to a meeting in Milan next week and I have a ton of work to get done by then on this SLOW-ASS SERVER!!! Grr.

In better news, today is my 4th wedding anniversary! I left a card and a heart-shaped tin full of Red Hots (cinnamon candy) for Mr Rebo - it says HOT4U on it…

Morning.

Another snowstorm. I like snow, but this is ridiculous.

Hurty to the feet. But then I can’t walk in heels. But it does remind me that I want to spend part of my next paycheck on some new clothes. Desperately need them.

It’s not even 10:00 and I’m already tired. This does not bode well for the rest of the day. At least I don’t have to be anywhere tomorrow until 2:00.

Back to search mines.

Mornin’ all.

Made dough last night for some Valentine’s sugar cookies, tonight should be the rolling, cutting, baking and decorating part. I love to bake! I don’t even really like to eat what I bake, I just like the baking part. :: shrug :: Cookies for all tomorrow.

Shadow I really like the Marta and the Juno Regina.

Tarragon and aruvquan thank you for explaining a “beef on weck.”

Morning, all. I was awakened by the Idiots barking loudly outside my bedroom door. They were probably barking out the back door (which is glass) at an Evil Attack Squirrel in the yard, but I was less than pleased. Especially since the cat and I were SO cozy – she was lying next to me, with her head up on the pillow just like mine! It was so cute to wake up and see her there, gazing contentedly at me and daring me to move her. Silly cat!

I always heard it was because it made it easier for women’s servants to dress them. Although men’s servants did, too; mostly, I think it’s to distinguish which are for men and for women, thereby enabling them to make the women’s far less sturdily and charge five times as much.

That’s a shame about that man dying in your storm, kai. The waters in your part of the world are SO dangerous. :frowning:

I like all those patterns, Shadow, so I’m not one to ask for a vote! Although, if I had my druthers, I’d pick the wool peddler’s shawl just because it looks lovely comfy and warm. If you’re making it for yourself, that is. The Madeline jacket looks like it might be seriously tricky, but it’s certainly gorgeous! And I do like that sweater you started knitting; it looks like a very flattering style. It could probably be done in a lighter weight yarn, by just working out the gauge and then adapting the measurements. Which would be a bit of work, but might be worth it.

Well, today is Primary Day around here, so I guess I should go clean up and head out to the polls. Don’t have too much fun while I’m gone!

Yowza, them’s some boots! I’m afraid to see the outfit they go with!

I bet quite a few people would be! Well, you’ll have to wait 'cos the outfit’s not ready yet. It’s for the Dead Rat Ball on the 1st March and it’s hopefully going to be finished next week when my friend comes to help me cut it down to size.

They do look quite ouchy, which is why it’s odd that 2 out of 3 reviews say they’re comfortable. :dubious: Well, I’ll report back when I actually get a chance to try them on.

haze, re the shoes…"Auntie Em! Auntie Em! No, really, they’re pretty.

shadow, all the patterns are very pretty but I love the last one “knitted ruana.”

rebo, very happy and romantic anniversary wishes to you.

boofae, those are some serious kick ass boots, sistah!

We are looking at some serious kick ass weather headed our way from out of the gulf with possible hail and/or tornados. Oh, yay! :stuck_out_tongue:

Tupug

Morning!

Snowing like a mofo over here, but at least it’s warmed up enough to snow, which is something I suppose. It’s still cold, but the bite is gone.

Work is hectic, as it has been since the big-ass blizzard the Friday before last, and the one that followed. Todays storm ought to just compound things. I think Ma Nature is making up for last year’s lackluster performance by overcompensating this year. But – a month to a month and a half at most and we’ll be able to look forward to busting out the spring fashions.

Beef on weck sounds … good, actually. Pretzel salt. Caraway seeds. Beef. Au jus. That could even work for a pastrami or Montreal smoked meat. Mmmm…

Back to work for me.

Beef on weck sounds like if could be an acceptable substitute for a Chicago-style Italian Beef, if it was dunked in the jus. Italian Beef’s one of the few foods that has a proper eating stance. Standing, elbows on the counter, leaning forward, feet apart so the drips land on the floor instead of on you. It’s just not practical to try eating one of these while sitting down unless you have a bib. <whimper> I’m getting hungry and homesick.

And serious brain overload from my certification review. AGH!

Morning folks!

I’m proud of myself: I actually remembered Valentine’s Day early enough this year, and ordered wifey some flowers!

Good Astroboy. Good boy! pat on the head

Good boy- here’s a cookie!

we’ll need pictures, of course.
