A list of 100 random, wide-ranged foods. How many have you had?

  1. Barbecue Ribs
  2. Biscuits and Gravy
  3. Cheese Fondue
  4. Clam Chowder - tasted anyway. I don’t like seafood, but everybody tells me I make a good clam chowder so I figured I ought to at least taste it for myself.
  5. Eggs Benedict
  6. Goulash (at least, one or two dishes that the person serving it to me called goulash)
  7. Honeycomb (both the Post breakfast cereal and the real, actual honeycomb)
  8. Hostess Fruit Pie
  9. Key Lime Pie
  10. MoonPie
  11. Pastrami on Rye
  12. Philly Cheese Steak
  13. Pineapple and Cottage Cheese
  14. Pistachio Ice Cream
  15. Po’ Boy
  16. Pocky
  17. Root Beer Float
  18. S’mores
  19. Sauerkraut
  20. Spam
  21. Venison
  22. Wasabi Peas

I don’t want to copy the list, but I’ve had 81 of them. I’ve seen this meme somewhere else with more exotic foods and scored 28 or 38, can’t remember which.

Three. And I’m not sure about one of them.

  1. Pavlova
  2. Shark*
  3. Sweet Potato Fries

There were an awful lot in that list that I didn’t even know what they were, but the safe assumption is I didn’t.

I eat maybe 12 things, over and over.

*Does dogfish count?

Damn! Hoped I’d be the first to claim durian. Mine was chilled, and not as disgusting as I had expected. Still, didn’t taste good - it tasted like the chemicals gas companies add to natural gas to make leaks detectable.

Anyway, the one’s I’ve eaten:

  1. Baba Ghanoush - not nearly as exotic as it sounds. Basically an eggplant salad.
  2. Bagel and Lox
  3. Baklava
  4. Barbecue Ribs
  5. Biscuits and Gravy - I’m a Southerner - my blood is 23% gravy.
  6. Black Pudding - a sausage, really. Made with blood.
  7. Black Truffle - the oil, anyway.
  8. Calamari
  9. Cheese Fondue
  10. Chicken Tikka Masala
  11. Chile Relleno
  12. Clam Chowder
  13. Crab Cakes
  14. Dulce De Leche
  15. Durian
  16. Eggs Benedict - only once, eggs disgust me.
  17. Fresh Spring Rolls
  18. Fried Catfish - again, Southerner. If it’s full of fat and sodium, we eat it.
  19. Fried Green Tomatoes
  20. Fried Plantain
  21. Frogs’ Legs - did not “taste like chicken”.
  22. Funnel Cake
  23. Gazpacho
  24. Goat
  25. Goat’s Milk - goat’s milk fudge, anyway. Yum.
  26. Gumbo
  27. Haggis - again, just tasted like sausage.
  28. Heirloom Tomatoes
  29. Hostess Fruit Pie
  30. Kangaroo - in a pub in Sydney.
  31. Key Lime Pie
  32. Lassi
  33. Lobster
  34. Mimosa
  35. MoonPie
  36. Octopus
  37. Paella
  38. Paneer
  39. Philly Cheese Steak
  40. Pineapple and Cottage Cheese
  41. Po’ Boy
  42. Polenta
  43. Prickly Pear - makes a good candy.
  44. Raw Oysters
  45. Root Beer Float
  46. S’mores
  47. Sauerkraut - I’m of Czech descent - it’s required.
  48. Spaetzle
  49. Spam
  50. Sweet Potato Fries

So that’s what? Fifty, I think.

57, although perhaps I’m cheating by counting crocodile as alligator?

If you’ve eaten flake, you’ve probably eaten shark.

  1. Bellini - had to look it up, think I’ve had it but not sure.
  2. Carp
  3. Dandelion Wine
  4. Durian
  5. Fugu - I’ve had the fish that fugu is made from, but at a Korean place, not prepared raw. So not sure whether or not that counts.
  6. Nettle Tea
  7. Pavlova
  8. Phaal
  9. Rabbit Stew - have had rabbit, but not in stew form
  10. Snake
  11. Squirrel

So, I have had somewhere north of 88 of the items on the list.

I’ve had about 60 of the items on this list - and I can thank my love of sushi for many of them.

Baba Ganoush isn’t an “eggplant salad” where I live, as Slow Moving Vehicle described it. I think of it more akin to hummus.

I was gifted with nettle tea from the Netherlands. I couldn’t figure out what kind it was, trying to read the words on the package. It had a mildly vegetal taste, neither good nor bad. Supposed to be very good for you.

Come to think of where’s balut and preserved eggs? I celebrated my first disgusting day by eating a preserved egg.

Interesting. You can easily knock pretty much all of those off your list with minor effort. I haven’t had:

Bellini
bird’s nest soup
crickets (although I’ve had cicada)
fugu
snake (although I may have had rattlesnake sausage once; I can’t remember)
som tam (I’ve been meaning to)
squirrel (unless I unknowingly had it in a pot of burgoo)
umeboshi

Bellini should be easy to cross off. I just need to get some peach puree and sparkling wine.

I don’t even know where I could get bird’s nest soup, fugu, or squirrel around here. Even Czimer’s (local game and exotic meat store) doesn’t stock it (but they do have racoon and beaver.) I suspect I’d be able to dig up crickets, but I’m not 100% positive.

Som tam is a green papaya salad. That particular name for it is Thai.
Umeboshi is a type of Japanese fruit. Wikipedia says it is translated as “salt plums” in English, so it’s possible I have had these before. I’m not sure.

I’ve not had less than 10 including Bellinni cocktails, chicken and waffles and several Asian dishes.

The southern continental 50.

I’ve had a lot of these.

I also should add, some of these are a little vague. Like what do they mean by “goulash”? I don’t think I’ve ever had the Americanized ground-beef-and-elbow-macaroni dish (although I’ve had similar dishes), but I’ve had the Hungarian stew as well as the soup.

And what is “Kobe beef”? I marked that I’ve had it, but I’ve never had true Kobe beef, and I don’t think you can even get real Kobe unless you’re in Japan. You can’t get it in the US, unless something has changed since the publication of that article on April 12, 2012.

And I won’t touch what “barbecue ribs” means, lest I start a debate.
