At another board I saw a list posted, called The Omnivore’s Hundred. It was created by a British writer, Andrew Wheeler, who has a food blog as well. The one hundred items are foods/drinks he suggested should be tried by everyone at least once.
I present the list here clean for you, and in a later post will add my own replies and comments.
Bold the ones you have tried.
Strike through those you wouldn’t even try.
Place an asterick by those you would try, but haven’t
Italicize those you have tried but would not eat again.
Comments are welcome! If you don’t recognize some items(*I *sure didn’t) there are Wikipedia links. The following website has some of those links in a list like this one, but there are other sites that also provide descriptive links:
I’ve eaten all that other stuff. Ummm, except for haggis and horse. And Spam, unless Underwood Brand Devilled Ham counts as the same thing, and I think it should.
Epoisses: A rather pungent French cheese.
Salted Lassi: A yogurt based drink from India. I’m fonder of the mango version, myself.
Phaal: A type of hot curry dish.
Umeboshi: a Japanese salted plum.
Kaolin: A mineral that’s often used in medicines–I didn’t know people ate it, either.
Baijiu: Chinese liquor, usually distilled from sorghum
Pocky: essentially a Japanese cookie–straw-shaped biscuits dipped in chocolate or a variety of other flavors.
Pho is Vietnamese soup
Aloo Gobhi is an Indian potato dish
Bagna cauda–I’ll let Baker have that one.
Fugu is pufferfish, the kind of sushi that can be deadly if the poisonous bit isn’t cut out just right
Paneer is yummy Indian cheese, but I’ve never heard of eating it plain–mattar paneer (peas and cheese in a tomato-based sauce) is my favorite Indian dish
Spaetzle is tiny German dumplings
Poutine is…scary.
ETA: Bellini is the composer of the opera Norma. Didn’t know he was edible, though.

No need to asterisk; I’ll try anything once. And I can’t really think of anything I wouldn’t try again, so I won’t italicize either. Although, wait, I don’t think I’ll need to try a raw Scotch Bonnet pepper again.
Nettle tea is tea made from nettles. It tastes…green. That’s it, just green taste, like if you made tea out of grass clippings. I’m not sure why it’s on the list; I can think of far more tasty and far more nastily adventurous herbal teas. (Although if I was allowed only one medicinal tea ever, nettles might just be it.)
Wow, that’s more work than I feel like doing. I’ll just delete what I haven’t had:

I’m not an adventurous eater, so I’m surprised that I’ve had so many items from the list…
A Bellini is an aperitif made out of Champagne an pureed peaches.
Thank you, JavaMaven, for the definitions. I’ve had French cheeses and Inidan curriesthat could curl your toes, so I think I can cross off Epoisses and Phaal. And I’ve consumed the cookies and yoghurt drink and salted plum. (I’ve had certain culinary advantages, living in New York and having an open minded palate.)
So that leaves me with Baijiu and Kaolin to try. And I think I’ll skip Kaolin, much as I respect our dirt-eating Southern friends.
