A list of 100 random, wide-ranged foods. How many have you had?

Sorry, pal, but given your username the existence of ANY non-bolded ones Does Not Add Up.

I could be mistaken, sure - when I’ve eaten it, it was at a Lebanese restaurant where I get a plate full of different dishes. So I couldn’t point to it, but know I’ve eaten it.

It’s basically hummus made with roasted eggplant instead of chickpeas (and, in my opinion, more delicious than hummus). So it’s of that sort of consistency: a creamy sort of dip.

Just listing what I haven’t ingested:

Bird’s nest soup
Borscht
Carp
Currywurst
Dandelion Wine
Dulche De Leche
Fugu
Haggis
Head Cheese
Honeycomb
Kangaroo
Morel Mushrooms
Nettle Tea
Pineapple and Cottage Cheese (is this a thing?)
Squirrel (but I’ve had Bear)
Sweatbreads
Zucchini flowers

So I’ve hit 83/100.

Last time I’d had 78.

This time I’ve had…78 ;). It appears I have made no progress in my culinary adventurism since then.

lawoot says: “Baba Ganoush isn’t an “eggplant salad” where I live, as Slow Moving Vehicle described it. I think of it more akin to hummus.”

I wonder where the heck you live where baba ganoush is different from everywhere else in the world.

Certainly it is akin to hummus, just made of eggplant. You do know taht a salad is not necessarily leafy greens?

Well, I haven’t uneaten anything since the last go-round, so I’m still going to claim 100 (with the caveats, like crocodile for alligator)

Oops I didn’t see fugu and squirrel. I haven’t had those either. Papaya salad I have had. It’s funny how many people haven’t had a bellini… that doesn’t even seem like a “thing” to me, it’s just a slapped together drink for brunch. Some Mexican places will offer the option of crickets sprinkled on their guacamole as a flavor enhancer.

“Salad” in American English generally connotes a dish of pieces of things (pasta, rice, vegetables) that are dressed with a combination of liquid, herbs and salt/pepper. I can’t think of any instances when it’s used for a mashed or pureed dish.

I don’t remember, but if I had to guess, I was probably counting foods I thought I had tried (that sounded familiar) in the first one.
In this one, I only counted those I was sure about.

Sometimes I try something at a party or buffet and won’t know what it’s called…for example: I tried a pastry at a party once and didn’t know it was baklava until much, much later when I had it again and heard what it was the second time.
So I’m accounting the number differences to having guessed on a couple before.

What sort of culinary wasteland does Idle Thoughts live in if he/she hasn’t had frito pie, dulce de leche or venison?

Anyway, here’s my 78:

Yeah, Mexican and Thai is where I would go for crickets. I’m actually surprised that I haven’t really noticed chapulines on Mexican menus here. I mean, I’ve come across and had goat eyeball tacos here, but not chapulines. I need to actively seek them out.

Y’know, come to think of it, I don’t recall ever seeing crickets at the Mexican grocery stores on the north side of Chicago, either. They’ve got dried shrimp and those wheat discs* and cones of brown sugar and yummy crumbly Mexican chocolate and other common Mexican specialties, and frozen guinea pigs and other “weird” meats like eyeballs and tails, and I’ve even seen lungs, which I think are not legal to sell in the US…but nary a cricket to be found. What’s up with that?

*What are those things, anyway? Look like little flat wagon wheels. Google is failing me.

I’m not finished yet.

You sure you’ve seen guinea pigs/cuy here? I think I remember seeing lungs at a Pete’s Market, but I’m not 100% sure. The brown sugar is piloncillo, and the orange wagon wheels are duros (wagon wheel style duros not pictured in the Wikipedia link, but here’s one.)
