You might have had it under a different name. In chinese it’s called “suan mei” which is translated as “sour plum”. It’s indeed very sour and usually covered in a sour/sugary/salty powder.
It’s also sometimes (but not often) served in congee.

Oh, yeah. Cermak has cuy (frozen) almost year round, but they’re $29.99 each, so I’ve never gotten one. I still like to pick them up and tease my husband with them, though. They’re pretty scary looking. This week I didn’t see any - their usual freezer space was taken up with utterly unexotic looking frozen whole tomatoes from, I think, Ecuador, and gigantic cacahuacintle. I mean, HUGE. I can’t imagine the ear those suckers come from.
I’ve also seen cuy in the freezer next to the quail at Rogers Park Fruit Market, but I haven’t been there in years.
Duros, thanks! I may have to try them sometime, just for fun. They’re ridiculously cheap.
Yeah, I wondered on that one, but checked it off, since like you, I’ve had all 3 versions (and a half dozen other Hungarian dishes that were riffs off the basic goulash/porkolt style).
I also wonder about how many of them people have had and not known that’s what they were eating, or that they’ve had something very similar- things like polenta and grits are awfully similar (maybe even the same, if hominy grits aren’t used). Or a po’boy vs a sub sandwich?
More than I thought, I’m not an adventurous eater…
54!
I have not had:
So, a score of 79, 80 if you count sea urchin roe. I traveled some when I was younger, I like staying home more now and only partly because it’s cheaper.

I’m not 100% sure what “bone soup” is, but if you just mean soup made from marrow bones or what not, oxtail soup is a good deal different, in my opinion. The focus of the oxtail soup is the meat itself, at least for me. The meat is perhaps the richest and most unctuous cut of beef on the cow. The only cut that comes close, for me, are the short ribs.
What, no Balut on the list? (MrPestus also asked about this)
I’ve had 56 of them:
Had 66 of them. Gotta say, for a purportedly random list, there’s a lot of American food on there.
I haven’t had 27, 30, 67 or 97.
Worst user name/post combo ever.
