I’m sorry to start things off by criticizing your poll, but my answer is none of the above. I use the “New Posts” link. I almost never click on a particular sub-forum link.
GD. Also Elections, quite frequently. I enjoy discussions and debate on philosophy, morality, politics, and public policy. Less frequently, IMHO, MPSIMS, the Pit, and Cafe Society. Occasionally GQ. Very rarely Marketplace (mostly to talk about my books) and the Game Room (sports and video games).
Sorry, Captain, I’m usually not aware of which forum I’m reading. In an attempt to answer your question, I clicked on most of the forums to see how many thread names looked familiar. I would say that I very rarely read anything in The Game Room, Thread Games, and Marketplace. I read a lot in all of the rest.
I pretty much always check the board in this order :
1)General questions
2)Great debates
4)The BBQ pit
7)IMHO
8)MPSIMS
9)The game room
14)Cafe Society
15)Elections
Except during game of throne seasons, where cafe society is number one, and everything else a distant second.
I’m not sure I ever opened Thread games. I know I opened Marketplace at least once.
Everything except the Game Room, I think;
More IMHO, GD, Cafe Soc, BBQ Pit, somewhat more GQ, somewhat less MPSIMS, than average.
But I pick what to read based on the post title, not the forum.
ETA: oh yeah there’s a forum called Marketplace. Umm hardly ever that. As with Game Room.
I think I can agree with everyone below that the marketplace option is likely never gonna get used. Specifically, there are so many other places to post stuff and I myself have not actually visited the Marketplace.
Nonetheless, this poll is intended to get an idea of what a general audience reads/looks for in posts so that my posts are best fitted for my audience (you guys) and can be seen by many. I’m not in it for fame but knowing what is/isn’t used might be helpful nonetheless.
Thanks for the responses thus far, folks!
Posting it is clearly IMHO. Now if we’re talking reading its probably a split between that and GD. I enjoy the insight into the human condition I get from both places.
I always start with Cafe Society, followed by IMHO and then MPSIMS. Those forums are where I “live.”
If I’m bored I’ll go to General Questions, then ATMB. If I’m *really *bored I’ll visit the Pit.
I never go to Great Debates*, Elections, The Game Room, Thread Games, or Marketplace, simply due to lack of interest.
*I actually do love a good debate. But the SDMB wasn’t my first message board, and when I came here I’d already learned that there is hardly ever such a thing as a “good debate” online…and, that I tend to get a little too wound up/impatient with idiots during them. I’m sure I could learn some things in that forum, and engage in some good critical thinking as a result of some posters, but the likelihood of any foray ending in disaster is *much *greater. So, I just stay away entirely. I credit the fact that I’ve been active here for 15 years to my avoidance of the Great Debates forum.
Yep, that’s how I do it… almost exclusively. I could better respond with a list of fora that I avoid. But even that’s not as cut-and-dry as one might need it to be to establish any meaningful trends.
I like MPSIMS and IMHO for entertainment, but I dig GD and GQ for knowledge. When I want to get my RO on, I’ll enjoy some of the DJT/`Pub rants in Elections. Well, *enjoy *is not really the word. I only hit the Pit when i want a laugh/chcukle.
Agreeing with that. I also go to ‘new posts’ and click on whatever looks interesting; I only pay attention to the forum if I’m going to post something {ETA: to post a new thread.] Occasionally I’ll be taken up short in the middle of a thread and then think ‘wait a moment, is this in the Pit?’ and check (generally in those cases yes, it’s in the Pit.)
Part of why I like this forum format is that I can look at all sorts of things, including subjects I didn’t know I was interested in, or didn’t even know existed, before I started reading about them.
I probably spend less time in Thread Games and the Game Room than elsewhere. When I started lurking on this board, sometime before I joined, I did often go through forums because that was the way the site came up when I wasn’t logged in, and as I remember it there wasn’t usually much in Marketplace, so it was hard to spend much time there.
Same here. I’ve been hit a couple of times for political jabs in GQ because I didn’t check what forum I was in. I’ve also screwed up with serious, rational, mature posts in the Pit.
But seriously, the Game Room is my usual first stop and depending on how busy I am I may venture into CS, IMHO and others. About this Message Board isn’t on the poll but I visit it way more often than Marketplace or Thread Games.
