For the record, Higgs cost about $400, but she didn’t come from a formal breeder - rather a family who had a couple of pugs that they bred.
As for the squished in faces - yes, it can be an issue. My daughter’s pug is much more smashed in, and she has to pay special attention to the wrinkle above his nose because it gets infected. But I don’t think she’s had to deal with any respiratory issues.
Higgs isn’t as smooshed-in, and we’ve had no issues with her at all. Pugs are people dogs for sure - they like to be around people and, at least in our house, they develop a favorite - luckily, it’s not me.
She’s smart, stubborn, and perfectly content as long as she’s got someone to hang with. She’ll also rassle with the cats and she gets along with other dogs once she gets to know them. Frankly, her worst feature is her tendency to bark at anything and everything she perceives as a threat. Like school buses, squirrels, passing vehicles, falling leaves, and wookalars. Her bark is particularly piercing and annoying, but a squirt bottle helps.
When you walk a pug, you need to have it in a harness rather than a collar - they don’t have much of a neck, plus there’s the whole breathing thing. And ours is a mutant - she HATES going in the car. My daughter’s pug, however, loves going in the car with her.
Biggest thing to be aware of - they ALWAYS act like they’re starving, which is why you see so many fat pugs. It’s really important to feed them the correct amount and no more. Higgs gets half a cup of kibble in the morning and in the evening, and a few little dog treats during the day. But she’d eat constantly if we let her. Daughter’s pug managed to get into the kibble bucket and he just about ate it all. She said his belly was so full, she thought he’d explode! And, of course come supper time, he was looking for more.
So there’s my pug opinions.
