Something a little different from the usual “the movie going public was raised by wolves” threads. Who knows, maybe someone out there actually read a rant and took it to heart? Or more astoundingly, someone with basic manners! Egads!
OK, So I recently went to the movies, when this 6’+ guy sits down right in from of my midget height self. He turns around and says “Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t realize that these seats were kind of a weird height. Am I blocking your view?”
I was a bit surprised, but managed to blurt out “Um, actually, yeah, a little”
He then excused himself and scooted over to a seat or two away, clearing my view. I thanked him, and he was very gracious about the whole thing. He chatted with his friends until the lights dimmed, then said " I’ll finish this story when the movie ends" and STOPPED TALKING SO THAT PEOPLE COULD WATCH A MOVIE. At this point, he also pulled out his cell phone, and TURNED IT OFF.
Polite people in a movie theatre. Now I’ve seen it all!
Or he was my husband who is an avid movie freak that can’t stand anything to interupt the film. He always makes sure we sit in the middle but not in front of anyone, makes sure I turn my mobile off as he is turning his off and god help me if I even consider makeing a comment during the film.
True, so far it was an isolated incident. But if I see people habitually going up to convience store counters and politely conducting transactions with a minimum of fuss, or people treating grocery store cashiers like a human and not an inconvienience that lies between them and the store exit, well, then, I’ll be sure that something is up.
And as a footnote, it’s a little sad that Mr. Polite helped me focus all of my movie going attention on The Count of Monte Cristo and not a better movie. But hey, I’ll take consideration for other people regardless of the movie I’m being subjected to!
