…like, say… Michelle Pfeiffer. Somebody you could see maybe one of the guys marrying. Peter had Sigourney Weaver as wasserface… Dana Barret. Rick Moranis had that “Yes, we’re back.” lady. Were any of the other guys involved with anybody?
Y’know, I don’t think so. The PC habit of adding women to a series just to have a woman sucks. Look how believable it was in the Terminator. There’s just no point, IMHO.
I can’t tell you how horrified I would be to have a woman added just to be a love interest. I’m not sure I’d be thrilled about having a woman Ghostbuster unless it was dealt with really well* but having a woman just for a love interest destroys the plot. They’re Ghostbusters. They’re not LoveBusters or something equally stupid.
*Like, let her just be a GHOSTBUSTER and don’t make a goddamn issue of her being a woman. Don’t make a big fuss about her being the “first female” Ghostbuster or anything. Don’t even mention she’s female. We can see it. Just let her be part of the group. Women always need to be something in film and culture; men just need to be.
How so? The first one had Sigourney Weaver as a love interest. It’s a comedy. Comedies almost universally have a romance in them, either as the main story or as a subplot.
The plot is “Ghostbusters - people who go out and bust ghosts”. The plot is not their little romantic foibles.
Now. If you are presenting me with, say, a person, and that romance somehow changes them as a person, or reflects on their personality, or helps them grow, I am more forgiving. But in too many movies it’s just there for being there and no other reason.
I am not saying I won’t watch movies with romances. But I am saying taking time out from the main plot to fool around with romance significantly detracts from the movie getting to its point.
Meryl Streep and Susan Sarandon have been doing comedy lately, so maybe one of them would sign on.
Aiming too high? Okay, I’ll drop down a little.
Linda Hamilton (already knows how to handle weapons)
Jane Curtin (already knows how to handle weirdness in general and Dan Aykroyd in particular)
Annie Potts (already knows how to handle the rest of the team)
Why are they calling this “Ghostbusters 3”? They never made a Ghostbusters 2. Oh i know some pranksters have vandalized IMDB and many other websites, even going so far as to stick home made versions in movie rental stores to make it appear as though they did, but THEY NEVER MADE A GHOSTBUSTERS 2. IT NEVER HAPPENED.
