A note to the straight supremacists and those verbally beating the tar out of them

To the straight supremacists: Take a break, please. You are producing a flow of vitrol unmatched by anything I’ve seen in my admittedly short tenure as a Doper. Even if you believe us to be totally wrong, you aren’t helping your cause when even St. Polycarp is pissed at you.

To the rest of us: I’m making a request, for the blood pressure of everyone here. I posit that
A: There are idiots on the board, immune to both reason and flaming on par with the big bang, and
B: that it’s not healthy to immerse yourself in such vemehence for a long period of time. IANAPsych major, so I could be wrong about this. But people, can we please calm down, and not go violently nuts? Please? Even though many deserve it, it’s not worth it.

You have no idea how cathartic it is to treat these vermin the way they deserve, do you? Here* its safe. They can’t hit me, they can’t hurt me, they don’t mean a damn thing to me, so they can’t abandon me and break my heart. Here, those who spread their lies, their hate and their anti-gay agenda get in turn everything every anti-gay bigot I meet in real life deserves, but cannot be given because our culture takes his side. Here the playing field is level, and here they will pay.

In response to point A, that doesn’t matter. And here’s why:

dreamer came to this board a literalist fundamentalist. See what she’s becoming now at the sight of some of the filth that’s revealed when some of those rocks are kicked over.

vanilla was happy when H4E staggered onto the boards. Yay! Another fundie, we’re so outnumbered! See her small stunned reaction in that latest tar-beating. Is the reaction so much of a hurrah now?

These are two examples, right there in text, why point A doesn’t matter one whit. It speaks well of them (and has given my cocky inner cynic a bloody lip and cartoon-style circling-dazed-birds expression like nothing else for some time as he wonders where the hell that bloody and bruised inner optimist came up with that sudden left hook from), and it speaks well of more–it’s a very good rule of thumb on any messageboard that far more people are reading than are posting. They are probably not isolated examples.

Point B: it would be a happier world if people didn’t have this view of human souls as being some fragile gossamer-and-glass sculpture that will shatter at the weight of entirely human emotions like, yes, fury. A great general rule of life for everyone is this: worry about your own blood pressure. Trust the keeping of the blood pressure of everyone else, to themselves.

i dont see how “our culture” in general takes “his” side…no matter how you construe the terms. certain segments, definitely.

KIRKLAND, I’m not gay, but I am Christian, and I can only view the things you post with stunned distaste. You may find it “cathartic,” but I wonder what sort of a person has that level of hatred and vitriol in them. It’s disheartening and it’s alarming. To tell someone to open their mind with a bullet? There are NO circumstanced under which that is appropriate.

Please. Stop helping.

As for the OP: There are many of us who are not heaping hatred or abuse of H4E or JERSEY or any other fundie. Are we not entitled to call bullshit when we see it, so long as we do so with a minimum of civility?

First i’m not gay… I’m glad i’m not gay.
to me
Homosexuality=wrong
I don’t hate anyone for what they are.
I however hate the choice that you made to become a homosexual.
Come back and bash me for what i believe.
I expect that because as everyone knows this is the forum to be bashing.
You go ahead and live your life as a gay. As long as you don’t effect me you’ll be ok.
The day a guy puts the moves on me is the day he gets his ass kicked.
I will not persicute someone for believing what they believe.
However I will not stand for anyone to rub thier homosexuality in my face.
I believe because of the choice you made to be gay (for those that are gay) that you will burn in hell.

oops somehow i posted that in the wrong thread…
don’t i look stupid

robert, I appreciate what you’re trying to do. But that thread is absolutely necessary.

The straight supremacists are busily displaying their ignorance. The more we argue with them, the more they show how unfounded their hatred is. By having them argue their cause in a public forum, we can expose them as the agents of evil and ignorance that they are.

Please examine the thread a bit more carefully; for every post where someone swears at a bigot, there are two that address their arguments. As it becomes more and more obvious in the course of the debate that some of the bigots are beyond reasoning with, they are mocked, sure. And lately, they’ve begun dropping out of the argument, with their arguments shot to pieces and the hatred in their stances made all too evident.

The longer that thread stays active, the more people have the chance to see what the straight supremacist mentality really looks like. And the more the term ‘straight supremacist’ gets out into the public eye. Personally, I believe that having an accurate term for these people will help open people’s eyes to the kind of hatred that’s behind these attitudes.

I’d rather the debate had stayed calmer, of course. But the kind of persistent ignorance that some of the bigots in that thread have displayed antagonizes many people here. And rightly so.

Don’t take it too hard. No matter where you posted that, you’d look stupid.

well it’s in your thread.

Yeah. And that’s why, too.

awd_dsm do you really believe that gay people made a lifestyle choice to be that way? I speak as a straight, but from the gay people I know and have met, I reallly don’t think that is the case.

Well, we’re all glad that you’re comfortable with your sexual orientation.

That’s your opinion.

Well, see, I think they’re saying that they didn’t “choose” to be gay, anymore than you chose to be attracted to members of the opposite sex.

This is the Pit, yes.

A commendable attitude.

So, if you asked a woman out on a date, and she wasn’t interested in you, would she be justified in spraying pepper spray in your face, using her black belt in judo to beat the shit out of you, maybe whipping out that pistol she carries in her purse and shooting you dead? Just for asking?

I mean, most people find the dating scene a bit intimidating at times, but it must be really tough where you come from.

(By the way, if you ever do act on that statement, you’ll be breaking the law, and I hope they throw the book at you.)

Good.

How do you define “rubbing it in your face”, anyway?

And I think when you die the worms will eat you. (Of course, I think that about everybody.)

Now see, I like it when some guy rubs his homosexuality in my face.

I just want to clarify that I still believe the bible to be the word of God. I just can’t find it in my heart or in the bible where it says it’s my job to be condemning and judging people.

Which is what makes all the difference, dreamer.

Thank you.
