Oops. Mea culpa.
Do CPS normally visit when a child attempts suicide or severely self-harms?
Let’s not be like this, at least unless and until he actually does that.

I honestly don’t know. However, considering everything else Republicans have done in Texas, I would not be surprised.
A leopard can’t change his spots. Neither can a slimy bastard like Cruz.
A leopard can’t change his spots.
… indeed.
We dunk on these people, and rightfully so, but may Ted Cruz’s daughter find the love and support she needs during this difficult time. Suicide is a terrible thing, and I am glad she was found before it was too late. Being a parent is rarely easy and being a child even less so. Prayers to Ted, Heidi, and the rest of the Cruz family as well.
Police Called to Ted Cruz’s Texas Home for Teen With Self-Inflicted Wounds
I hope his daughter gets the help and care she needs. I hope he takes a good, long look in the mirror and thinks about how this could have been prevented.

I think he grew the beard to avoid that very act.
Beard hides his lack of chin, nothing hides his lack of spine.
I hope his daughter gets the help and care she needs. I hope he takes a good, long look in the mirror and thinks about how this could have been prevented.
I dislike Cruz as much as anyone, but I’ll also push back on the idea that a parent should be blamed for an attempted suicide by their child. I know a few parents who have gone through this, and it’s pure hell. Without evidence to the contrary, I’m going to assume Cruz isn’t a terrible parent, and that this event is not his “fault.”

Self analysis and introspection are not skills that folks like Cruz have in abundance. He will likely come away from this blaming Biden.

This. Because while I won’t sight unseen blame Cruz (no matter what I think of him) for being causative of the event, it is absolutely fair to ask him to look back (honestly!) and see if there was anything that as a parent, regardless of how busy or important he is, could or should have done to prevent it.
But since there is zero evidence that said daughter was Trump or a Trump supporter, I think we’re way beyond the thread. So let’s hope, for best schadenfreude and in the spirit of the season, that Cruz’s heart grows three sizes this day, and he abandons all he was before to be a better person as a silver lining to the tragic event.

Okay, I’m with you so far.
Without evidence to the contrary, I’m going to assume Cruz isn’t a terrible parent,
Here’s where it gets ironic. A month ago, the answer to “Is Ted Cruz a terrible parent?” wouldn’t even have been close. After all, he’s a terrible human being, a terrible Senator, a terrible American, and the list goes on; it would be implausibly inconsistent for him to not be a terrible parent. Yet this tragic occurrence makes that assessment require “evidence to the contrary?”
Huh.
and that this event is not his “fault.
Agreed; an a priori assumption that it is his fault would be wrong.
And may I state for the record that discussion of the incident in the Schadenfreude thread makes me uncomfortable. People went on television a couple of weeks ago proclaiming that the mass shooting in Colorado Springs was, on balance, a good thing. I like to believe that we’re better than those folks.

A lot of good parents loose a child to suicide. Or at least people who seem to be good parents. Those people spend the rest of their lives racked with guilt. Cruz is a terrible person and I’m certainly open to the idea that he’s a terrible parent. Teen suicide is a complex issue and I’m resistant to the impulse to blame the parents first, even reprehensible ones.
And may I state for the record that discussion of the incident in the Schadenfreude thread makes me uncomfortable.
I will say it was not my intention to start a discussion, I only wanted to make the point that the targets of our ire are humans with real problems too.
I agree with your implication: if people wish to discuss teen suicide, I may suggest someone start a new thread and link to it here.
Here, actual Schadenfreude to get us back on track!
A newly unsealed grand jury indictment alleges that former Rep. David Rivera, a well-connected Florida Republican, illegally acted on Venezuela's behalf.
The newly unsealed criminal indictment accuses Rivera of using his ties to members of Congress and former President Donald Trump’s White House in attempts to broker U.S. deals with the regime of Nicolás Maduro. Accused along with Rivera is Esther Nuhfer of Miami-Dade County, a political consultant and lobbyist with longstanding ties to Rivera.
There ya go! If you read the article in full, there are lots of hints that more memorable and influential members of Trump’s circle were fully involved, but with their names obscured with codewords to dodge such investigations.
I hope he takes a good, long look in the mirror and thinks about how this could have been prevented.
Given past his actions I truly doubt he’s that introspective. Isn’t she one of the ones he at least shoved in front of the bus when he was found sneaking off to Cancun a year ago?

What are the chances he pays cent 1 of that $14k?
I say the chances are slim and FAT.
Do you think it’s possible for parents to prevent a child from self-harming behaviors?
No, but going in front of TV cameras and blaming your daughter for your failures as a US Senator is not going to help matters.
Promoting anti-gay legislation and positions when your child identifies as bi doesn’t help, either.
