Not too much more to tell. It was an industry annual conference, and part of the day is a “speed dating” round where we advisors would sit at little tables and every 3 minutes a different supplier would come around to tell you what’s new with them, current promotions, etc. Pretty sure this was 2017.
There were three of us at our table, and we saw that Trump DC was coming up. We all agreed that we would be professional, civil, and courteous. The sales director began by asking us if we had ever booked their property. I stated, truthfully, that I just didn’t get business in DC, and so it was a non-issue for me. I thought that was a nice way to sort of not engage without being rude. She then asked if we would consider booking their hotel should the opportunity arise, and I couldn’t lie; I said probably not, as it just didn’t seem like a property my typical client would be interested in (again, true, I think). She then point-blank asked if that was because we didn’t like Trump. I said that, in all honesty, I was uncomfortable with the President of the United States having going business interests like this. Again, true, and about as polite a way as I could think to dodge the question.
She went off. She was clearly tired of hearing anti-Trump sentiments (which was why I tried to leave some graceful exit points), but it was also clear that she was of a Trump type; no efforts to be persuasive or conciliatory - just on and on about what a great property it is, and how it wasn’t fair that we should penalize all the hard working men and women at the hotel just because we were against the President, all in a really aggressive manner; she was actively berating us for our reluctance. At some point she asked (and this is almost verbatim), “one of our doormen is a young man from Guatemala. Should he lose his job and have to go back there just because you won’t book guests at our hotel?” I lost it. I informed her that if her only strategy to win us over was guilt, then they had a lousy business plan and I had no interest in them whatsoever.
I found the head of our agency and filled him in, and he assured me he’d speak to some people at Virtuoso. I never did see her again at any industry events.
Funny thing is that about an hour later we met with the rep from what was then the Trump Hotel in Toronto. Lovely young lady, pleasant as can be, and we had a very nice chat. One of my colleagues did casually mention the DC rep, and this young woman just lowered her gaze, shook her head sadly and said, “yeah…”
