A classic example of why somebody who takes on the job of being the freaking POTUS is supposed to cut ties with their private business interests. Trump’s allowed to use his POTUS power and prestige to shill and grift for his own hotels to put money in his pocket, but nobody else may allow their opinion of his POTUS activities to influence their patronage of his hotels? Fuck that hypocritical bullshit.
No reflection on you carlb, a very trenchant story and well told!
Did anyone else do a double take at the picture in that article and think it was Derek Chauvin, the cop that killed George Floyd? Just me?
I love that you knew this site existed, thought it was well enough known that you didn’t have to spell it out, and that no Dopers have asked what it stood for. Thumbs up for this post.
I may be wrong but I assumed Ike_Witt was joking because the name sounds like a porn name.
I suspect the difference there is that the Trump Hotel & Tower in Toronto was one of those deals where they licensed the name but Trump himself had little to do with it. The Trump Organization did have a management contract for a time and owned a minority interest, all of that long gone.
Like everything Trump touches, even remotely, the place went to shit, the owners were sued by investors, and the place was so poorly maintained that, rather symbolically, the “P” fell off one of the giant Trump signs and was just left that way, while in the meantime a city councilor moved to have the “Trump” name changed because it was an embarrassment to the city. Today the place has been rehabilitated and operates under the St. Regis brand, owned by Marriott. Somewhere in a dumpster or a landfill are two sets of gigantic letters spelling T-R-U-M-P, with one of the Ps a bit dented from having fallen off the building.
