Admittedly, as a white guy I wasn’t familiar with Juneteenth or the Tulsa riots until Trump had the tone-deaf idea of holding a rally at the intersection of the two during a time of racial strife. So in some sense he did make Juneteenth famous, in the same way that Custer made the little bighorn river famous.
Also pro-tip: if you are worried about the blacks f------ hating you, a good first step would be to stop referring to them as “the blacks”.
I think this belongs here because the mom is spot on albeit a few years too late:
“If he gets 20 years in prison, he’ll be 70 years old before he gets out of there. Trump doesn’t care about any of those people that stormed the Capitol for him. He doesn’t care one iota about them.”
I watched that interview (in the CNN special—well worth anyone’s time).
What is particularly devastating is that the mother has leukemia. She may not have a long time to live and yet her son is estranged from her, choosing Trump over her.
Really, really awful stuff.
All the show’s interviews with the Trump fans/Capitol invaders, and their relatives, are deeply affecting. There’s a pattern of the interviewer presenting them with facts, and the people just saying, basically, 'facts don’t matter, what matters is the way I feel when Trump talks about the Mexicans being rapists and the Black Lives Matter people being thugs’ etc. Just overt attraction to white supremacy and overt distaste for truth.
It’s actually difficult to feel schadenfreude about the people interviewed, willfully and stubbornly ignorant as they are. Genuine pity combined with genuine contempt gets closer to it.
That is fucking amazing. Stop and take a moment to appreciate that. Trump tried to sic the Justice Department on those hard hitting journalists at Saturday Night Live. Jesus fuck, could his ego possibly be more fragile?
I swear, he ran for president only because Obama made fun of him at that White House Correspondents’ dinner. This whole 5-year nightmare is due to his thin skin.
I think he ran because ABC canceled his stupid show The Apprentice. He has to have adoring fans. He has to have ‘air’ time. I don’t think he or anyone thought he would win, and when he lost, he was going to try to start his own TeeVee network that would out FOX FOX with horseshit. The next in a series of Trump failures.
Oh, and Putin played him like a drum. Not much of a gamble on Putin’s part cause he knows what a fuck up he is.
The story I remember hearing was that he was pissed off that NBC was paying Christina Aguilera more money for “The Voice” than he was getting for “The Apprentice”, and that’s why he decided to run for Pres.
But what amazes me is how his followers see him as this strong authority figure when all he is is a whiny fucking cry-baby.
It’s not trivial. It’s scary. That is the classic mindset of the authoritarian leader, whom no-one is allowed to criticise, and can be punished by the full authority of the state for doing so.
By contrast, there is a story that a fellow was waiting in the White House to meet with President Jefferson. The waiting room, as is always the case, had newspapers for those who waited. The fellow started reading one of the papers, and it had a scurrilous, scandalous attack on Jefferson in it. When he finally met with Jefferson, he showed him the paper asked him why such a rag was in the waiting area. Jefferson handed the paper back to to him, and said, “Tell everyone where you found it.”
