I’m pretty sure that along with his other unqualified picks, he can fire the white house executive chef and replace him with the fry cook at the West Palm Beach McDonald’s.
McConnell says no recess appointments for Trumpy Wumpy.
DOGE in action.
If I was a White House cook or employee I’d consider quitting… I know they go from president to president and aren’t really supposed to be considering the particular office holder. But this one is an exception, that one in a million that I’d hate to work for.
What I find so delicious about headlines like this is that we are seeing Trump’s opposition in action and it isn’t Democrats. The people who are supposed to be giving Trump unlimited power are instead stabbing him in the back immediately and he’s not even sworn in yet!
Yeah, but how many times has McConnell spoken out against Trump before, only to cave almost instantly. When he says “there will be no recess appointments”, I think “here come the recess appointments.”
McConnell’s term ends in 2026. It’s quite possible he won’t stand for another term, in which case he has no fucks left to give and is likely more concerned with his legacy than anything else.
First Cornyn, and now McConnell. My bingo “N” will be Rick DeSantis, who will find some Desantish way to be the next fly in Donald’s hair varnish.
I was thinking the exact same thing.
Yeah, like when Trump told McConnell to abolish the filibuster in 2017, and he immediately did so.
Right?
McConnell cares about preserving the power of the Senate a lot more than he cares about making Trump happy. And that goes for most senators, else Rick Scott would be Majority Leader now. Hell, at this point he and Thune are doing more to hamper Trump’s agenda than Schumer and Jeffries are with their wishy-washy “I hope the Speaker decides to release the ethics report on his own because that would be the bipartisan thing to do” talk.
I read on the DailyKos that Rick Scott immediately replied “Yes, there will be.” So there may be some infighting there.
I also read that some Trump supporters have come up with a workaround for recess appointments. It’s to use a clause in the Constitution in a way that doesn’t match what it plainly says. They think the second half of this clause gives the President the power to recess Congress:
What do you think it plainly says? I think it plainly says he can adjourn Congress, and potentially they can’t reconvene until he recalls them at ‘such Time as he shall think proper’. It’s arguable that he can only adjourn on extraordinary Occasions, but I’d argue that clause is only for convening.
And considering the deference SCOTUS now gives to unfettered executive power, who is going to disagree?
Because that worked so well for Charles 1.
It says he can only adjourn them when they disagree on when to adjourn. If there’s no disagreement, or if there’s a disagreement on something other than the time, he can’t force them to adjourn.
The theory is, the MAGAs in the house are more loyal to Trump than the senators, and they’ll manufacture a disagreement, no matter how stupid it will look.
Certainly he can. But practically speaking, a lot of what Trump likes about the way his McDonald’s food tastes comes from proprietary ingredients. So he’ll still have to extort the Corporation into supplying the new cook with that stuff.
I’ll believe it when I see it. So far my betting money would be on Donald getting everything he wants, Mitch or no Mitch.
Matter of fact, “no Mitch” earlier than 2026 may be one of the things Donald wants.
Mike Johnson says we don’t need to see the Ethics Committee report on Gaetz.
The chairman of the Ethics Committee says that’s not his call and they’re voting on releasing it on Wednesday.
I don’t know why everyone is treating this as a binary outcome:
This sounds like exactly the kind of compromise I’d expect Congress to make.
