Neither an American nor a lawyer, but my reading of this is the judge was pointing out that the additional evidence that came to light involved additional victims, while the plea deal only covered charges involving the “first” victim, and so the plea deal would not be affected by bringing additional charges.
I had no idea about that “culture”. I read that article and a Harpers article that was linked to and it’s left me a bit speechless. It’s all so freaking odd. And sad.

It is bad enough for teenage girls and young women already, without - to paraphrase - “toxic non-masculinity”, to deal with men and boys who feel that the world owes them sex & a relationship, despite the fact they (the males) are not up to the task.
They are pro-violence, pro-rape and pro-pedophilia and appear to be getting worse. Much like other violent movements the few who do something spectacular enough to make the news are just the tip of the iceberg.

As a proofreader for three court reporters taking hearings in federal court, I AM familiar with how hearings usually go, and this was frikkin extraordinary.
This story is particularly delightful to me, after being subjected to months of ads suggesting that Sam Page is a murdering rapist, or raping murder, who is insufficiently loyal to Trump - with the latter being the far more serious offense. For months, it was like he was every other ad I saw…..and I don’t even live in or particularly close to that district.
Then Berger lost by TWO votes on Election Day, after spending something like 10 million to try and save his seat. IIRC, his opponent Sam Page spent something like 50K.
Now, it’s not like Page is some sort of liberal, he’s a typical Trump Republican asshole even if his opposition found one clip of him saying that he didn’t Trump’s deportation goals were realistic.
But -if the victory holds- it throws a big wrench into the Republican plan to turn the state into a Handmaid’s Tale type dystopia, as Berger was spearheading that effort.
However, apparently Berger’s son is on the State Supreme Court, so I expect more shenanigans.
Nothing frightens me more. I just have to look at the normal and decent people I see around me, and hope they’re in the majority.
