Okay, obviously the video poster is not a class act, downing four trays of oysters and also a dinner of crab cakes and potatoes on what was understood to be a date for drinks. But a lot of the commentary seems to be about how disgusting the slurping of oysters was. (Not so much on the YouTube commentary, but elsewhere the Tiktok is posted.)
Yeah, the sound is not pleasant. It’s probably not the best way to make a first impression on a date.
But honestly, is it possible to eat oysters on the half-shell without slurping? I’ve eaten oysters a couple of times, and I’m not sure I’m recalling correctly, but I think slurping was involved.
When I was in my early 20s I had a girlfriend who civilized me in several ways, one of which was training me not to slurp when I ate soup.
But my understanding is that slurping is not only socially acceptable but necessary in Asian cultures, where people slurp their noodle soup. It’s served piping hot, so slurping the noodles is a way to cool them off so you don’t get second degree burns in your mouth.
well quite, but being “not quite” separated from the shell is the only scenario where a bit of extra oral purchase might be required and a slurp might result.
