A Question [possible to friend someone?]

Is it possible to friend someone on this forum? Is so how?

There was a way to friend other users on vBulletin but that didn’t carry over when we migrated here to Discourse.

So we can’t friend people here?

All I know is that I no longer have a “friends” list. There’s a “send invite” thing but I have no clue what it does, if anything.

The closest thing we have is our ignored and muted lists. Clearly Discourse isn’t very friendly. :stuck_out_tongue:

To be honest, I had people on my friends list on the old board, but it didn’t really seem to serve any actual purpose from what I could tell, so its absence here isn’t a big deal.

Where?

Notes from Discourse on Invites:

We don’t really use them here.
But they could be I think. It seems easier to PM someone.

Click this and it will take you to your own invites page:

No. We don’t have that here.

In vBulletin, you could set things in your profile to be visible to everyone, visible only to friends, or not visible at all to anyone (except mods and admins).

It was also fairly easy to send a PM to someone on your friends list. It was also more difficult to look up someone’s exact user name on vBulletin. Discourse makes it much easier to find someone’s user name, so the ability to quickly PM from your friends list isn’t so important on the new software.

Most people didn’t really use the friend features on vBulletin, probably due to its very limited functionality. I can’t remember anyone complaining about its absence after we moved to Discourse.

ETA:

I have also updated the title of this thread/topic. Please use descriptive titles.

I believe you have to be Trust Level 2 to send invites. New users can’t send invites.

That is how the documentation reads from Discourse.
Still vague on what an invite would do for someone on the board.
It would work better to send to someone off the board.

I think it just invites someone to participate in either a thread or a PM, and that’s it.

I’ve never actually used it so I’m not sure.

After fiddling with it a little bit, it looks like you can send it to someone’s email to invite them to the board. It will send them a link to a specific thread/topic.

Yes, that seems to be the main use. But I mean most people would just text or Email the link.

FYI, I’m glad we don’t “friend” each other here. How many of those “friends” on other social media are actually friends?

“Hi, this is Digs. Digs, with a D… you don’t know me, but I’m at the airport. And since we’re Facebook friends, I was hoping you could pick me up…”

Yeah, we’re all friends here. Even the few dipsticks among us.

Awww. I’ll be your friend.

(Clearly I don’t understand how other social media things use the friend people whatchamacallit)

Huh??

Ahh, there’s more than a few.

Aha, you’ve already figured out the proper response to Becks running at you with arms open wide…

Watch out, friendship with her entails being dragged into her weird family and even weirder pranks (often involving you in a Bigfoot costume).
