I find this very affecting. Story and photos are here.
A monkey and a dog are best friends. The monkey even likes to ride the dog like a horse. Bastard neighbor is annoyed at the pair and becomes even more so when they receive media attention. Bastard neighbor poisons the dog. Photo of monkey trying to wake up his friend to go play.
The animals’ owner is a cop. At first I wondered what was up, because in Thailand, police are generally a law unto themselves, and this would have to be a pretty wimpy cop to let something like this pass, let alone happen. But then I see the bastard perp neighbor is another cop. Obviously a more powerful one. I can tell you not a thing will happen to him. There are good cops and bad cops here, but they’re all pretty much untouchable by the law.
That is so sad. Maybe if enough people are upset by the media coverage of it something will happen to the perpetrator? I would like to think so at least.
I’m afraid not. First, again the perp is a cop and thus untouchable. Second, it’s already passed out of the news. Animal cruelty is such an everyday occurrence – which surprises many considering this is a Buddhist society – that not that many people raise an eyebrow. Monkey riding a dog? Cute as all get out and gets coverage everywhere. Man poisons the dog? Small coverage in the English-language press, next to none in the Thai press.
