No, it was from the Kraft website. Can’t remember why I decided I wanted to make strata. Couldn’t find a strata recipe that sounded appealing in any of my bazillion cookbooks, so I visited my friend Google instead. Here’s the link. I made it with real cheddar cheese instead of the pasteurized process cheddar cheese, so I’m guessing I upped both the calorie and fat content. On the other hand, I made it with Home Pride whole wheat bread (or some such), so I might have upped the fiber content a smidge.
…and now I remember why I was looking for the strata: the bread was left over from an emergency run to the dairy store when I had unexpected guests recently.
By the way, which Cooking Light had the bread pudding recipes?
October 2004. It had several of them - all savory, I believe vs. the standard sweet. I just typed the Sausage, Cheddar & Apple one into my MasterCook software - I’ll have to see when I can make that. It uses sourdough bread - should be interesting.
I’m in the midst of deciding what form of dessert to bake tomorrow night - it’s basically between Oatmeal Cranberry Cookies & Brownies.
Thanks Susan. This is of course one of the CLs I actually bought (I usually just get them out of the library; what can I say - I’m cheap). And where was it when I went looking for recipes? About 6th or 7th in the magazine pile. Dunno why I didn’t look through the magazines for strata recipes…
Looks good, might have to try it sometime (I’m strata’d out for the moment - it was both breakfast and supper today and one of my meals yesterday; the rest is going in the freezer for future reference).
As for the dessert: add chocolate chips to the cookies and you’ll get the best of both worlds.
Or maybe not.

(Still not working…but edging closer to the sofa where the work laptop is napping.)
Did you make the bread pudding with the sausage and apples? I think the one with squash and parmesan sounds good too (sounds odd, I know, but one of my favorite recipes is a pumpkin gnochhi that combines the same flavors).
Why, yes, I believe I recall hearing that you were quoted. Haven’t seen that issue yet…I’ll have to take a look.
I’ve never in my life heard of strata. It is an entirely new concept to me. Is it a Mid-West thing, or something left over from a '50’s childhood that no one admits to eating anymore (like my orange jello salad, aka orange sherbert dessert). Nevertheless, I am intrigued. There is nothing intrinsically suspicious about this combination of foods, with slight modification (I’m not fond of sausage per se, but it is an easy item to substitute) these are all foods I eat, and, although I not not encountered this particular method of putting these foods together, I have had similar preparations. I need more information.
Bread pudding has been mentioned–I’m not overly fond of bread pudding. Would this be an obstacle to my enjoyment of strata?
Supposing any similarity of bread pudding is speculative enough for me to go ahead and try strata, how well does it keep? Can it be eaten cold, or re-heated? I’m single you know, (so far, but, All-Knowing Eight Ball willing, that could change at any time) and even cutting down the recipe it looks as though I’d be making enough for more than one meal. I’m pretty good at breakfast, too. (As the kid goes for broke.)
if I have day old bread, it’s usually in the freezer. Should I let it thaw before making strata, or will the inevitable effect of liquid and heat insure a proper blending of flavors?
If this thread needs to shut down so that FCM won’t be confused, or even just to prevent reality from collasping into itself, I’m going to do a cut and paste of this whole post so I can get some answers. After my experience with the crock pot and rice, I’m getting the entire story before I venture into new cooking experiences.
Kallessa, I’ll deal with my confusion until you get your answer. Because I care. So fret not…
Now, it is a Federal holiday, so the question is whether the MMP will be bounced to Tuesday. Will the rest of the DeDay clan make untoward demands upon Rue’s time when we so clearly need him here? Will he manage a post to start this week? Must we cling to the past? And what about Naomi??
I’m pretty sure Soupo and Katcha will be at home today, so don’t expect much from Rue. That means we can have a TMP or have an alternate MMP if we wish.
As for Strata, I’ve heard of it, but just. I think it might be a midwest thing.
Shibb, former prisoner of the midwest, who has thrown loose those hoary shackles to migrate south, where today it is cold (by local standards).
Well, yeah, Katcha is always home, but he’s still little, so I figure Rue can take him easily. But if Soupo is off school, that’s 2 against 1, which makes the battle a bit more difficult. And if the Little Woman is home, all bets are off…
He’s only got 3.5 hours or so before the MMP would have to be a MAP, but I’m guessing TMP is more likely.
Obviously, Rue needs to reevaluate his priorities. His kids need to become more independent. They need to learn to share - specifically to share their dad. We have needs, too, and there are more of us! Rotten kids…
Oh, and it snowed here over night. Not a lot - just a very light dusting, but it was easy to see it on the blue tarp that’s covering our firewood. Now the sky is clear and the sun is creeping higher, but it’s still really cold out there. And that’s the weather update from Helen Estates in Mechanicsville, MD.
The Official Rule for Week Old MMP’s is:
You can keep the old one going until the Official MMP for the New Week is up. (And if I’m too slow off the blocks for you, start your own MMP. Scout did that one time and we all still love her.) Then the old one dies and everything gets shifted to the new one (with links and quotes needs be).
Of course we all know how well the MMPers deal with rules…
