A simulation game that can run slowly, in the background, while you do other things

I have in mind specifically a political simulation of some kind, whether medieval, modern day, spacefaring or whatever. What would be awesome would if I could just have this kingdom (or whatever) running constantly in the background at a rate slow enough that I don’t have to have my attention on it constantly but rather could interact with it a few times a day.

Crusader Kings II actually almost works for this if I keep it on low speed, but CKII w/out the micromanagement that keeps your attention on it is, well, kind of not a very interesting game. Plus wars demand immediate attention, and what I’d like is a game where I just get notifications or something and can get around to responding whenever I’d like.

Does such a thing exist?

It would scratch an itch similar but not identical to the itch scratched by the turn based boardgames I play online, making a few moves a day.

I remember playing at nationstates.net for a while. There was even a Doper community over there.

It doesn’t really have enough meat on its bones to keep interesting for too long, though.

Hmm… how fast does Banished run at speed 1? That might be doable after you get past the first year or so.
