A strange stomach question!

Everytime I go away to somewhere that is very very hot and humid, for example Asia or Africa, my stomach automatically goes very very flat…why is this?

As soon as I return home it pops back to normal after a day or so. I probably should point out that I am very slim and do have a flat stomach generally but just not quite as flat as when I’m away.

Does this happen because of the heat and humidity and how my body absorbs the water I’m drinking? Although my stomach shrinks my wrists and ankles (and head it feels) swell up- I know this is because of heat, but why does the stomach flatten and everything else swells?

Does this happen to anyone else?

I don’t know the exact mechanism behind your tummy, but a number of things are at play here, including the temperature.

Humidity and temperature could cause you to sweat and the fluids in your body will be called into action. On a very hot day, you might even notice that you haven’t urinated all day, if you are sweating enough.
Somewhat of WAG is that your body is preparing, based on the heat, to mobilize fluids. Some fluids are moved out of your core and to the sweat glands. In your case, these glands contribute to swelling in other area.

If your diet changes, this would affect your body shape as well. Some sugars can have a ‘smoothing effect’, while a saltier fat and protein diet might see you feeling and looking more bloated and causing water retention in different areas.

Dietary differences can cause veins/arteries to pop out and give muscles a very defined appearance.

It’s hard to give a specific answer, but how your body moves blood and water is greatly affected by the weather/temps/etc, and you must also not discount differences in your diet when you travel.
