(I’m feeling pretty cruddy so I thought I’d post this early and go to bed.
Feel free to not reply until it’s Monday whereever you are!)
Nothing poetic, nothing deep
Just a little message to greet you after you sleep
See you tomorrow I will say
May tomorrow be a better day.
As tired as I was after dinner with the inlaws (my garlic encrusted broiled shrimp was divine, btw), I went to the sto’. Now we has fud for the week.
I have to drive down to Memphis soon–my parents are closing the Memphis house and moving to Washington DC (me dad inherited his parent’s house). Memphis house not sold yet. My mother drove me crazy with exchanges like this one:
Mom: I don’t know what to do with my wedding dress.
Me: Oh?
Mom: It’s a gray silk shantung suit (circa 1956). I don’t fit it anymore. (Mom is a good 4 inches shorter than I am–I am not a candidate for this suit. Never was.)
Me: Well, do you want to keep it? I have a friend that didn’t want to give away her clothes when her mother died. She found a woman who makes remembrance quilts and she did a lovely one for her. Now she has an heirloom and all those good memories still.
Mom: I can’t imagine putting scissors to this suit!!!
Me: mmkay. What about [eldest sister’s name here]? She’s your height and thin.
Mom: It’s the wrong shade for her.
Me: [eyeing the sambuca with longing] Um, well, you could, you know, give it away…
Mom: I just couldn’t!
Replicate this for all common household items and plants in the yard. Lather, rinse and repeat. Again and again and over and over. Now I have to drive down to get some “stuff”. My courage falters, people!
Daughter is home from first party (of today). She is up taking a nap for the next round: the Lock In at a local fun house place. Gah.
Yes, feel better Soapy.
I made salsa today… Mmmmm salsa! Not my regular recipe but close enough to satisfy my salsa craving
Fresh Salsa
4-14 oz cans diced tomatoes, drained (I usually use fresh, but I didn’t want to go to the store)
1 medium white onion, chopped
4 large cloves garlic, chopped
2 tsp white vinegar
5 habanero peppers, chopped and stems removed
5 Serrano peppers, chopped and stems removed
about 5 ounces or so of roasted hot green chilies, peeled and stems removed
1 tsp cumin (more or less, depending on your taste)
Salt and Pepper to taste
Handful dried parsley (Again, I usually use fresh…)
Makes about 8 cups or so of salsa. I put it in mason jars and keep in the fridge. Stays good up to about 3 months.
I made this in my 14-cup Cuisi… My suggestion, mix all ingredients in a large bowl and add to food processor in batches. Pulse until desired consistency.
Note: This salsa is very HOT!! Also, I highly recommend wearing plastic gloves while handling and chopping the peppers and chilies.
Well, we were sitting around grumping at the rain when my son and future DIL came by on their bikes and talked us into going out for a ride with them–rain and all! It was nice, if a bit chilly, and afterward I fed them lunch and beervage. I think I’m a pretty good mom sometimes.
I’ve been living on cheezburgerz lately and I have no idea why–usually I’ll go for months without eating any beef at all but right now I have major brgr tropism. I think I’ve found something that approaches the perfect burger–chopped jalapenos, American cheese melted over the top and then smothered in a gigantic pile of caramelized onions then liberally bedecked with ketchup. On a garlicky toasted bun. It’s to die for. The only thing that makes it better is sleazy chili but we ate all that days ago.
So, remember a while ago I posted about Himself’s twin brother who’s been diagnosed with MS and who blew off Himself’s condolences with a hostile asshole message? Well, MSBro’s girlfriend (who met Himself like ten years ago and apparently formed something of a tendresse for him–that’s quite a long/involved story!) has been sending what he describes as “go away closer” messages on his MySpace page. Himself is annoyed and has decided not to answer any of her messages, but if MSBro finds out she’s still carrying this torch he’s probably gonna go ballistic-er. Yay. Why can’t all families be cheerful and uncomplicated and all about bike rides and lunch, anyway?
Mmmmm, salsa–that sounds good, geek! One of my favorite snacks is to take some chunky salsa, some fresh garlic, some pickled jalapenos and maybe a smidgen of chipotle pepper in adobo sauce and send 'em through my Magic Bullet blender thingy until it’s all smooth, then mix it up with grated sharp cheddar cheese and a nice ripe avocado chopped up small. Scoop up with Juanita’s tortilla chips. Nom nom nom…
Argh, Himself is frying bacon and it smells SO GOOD! I didn’t think I was hungry until I smelled it. Bacon is hardwired into the pleasure center of the brain, I think!
Nice OP Soapy, sure hope that you feel better. I myself have The Plague, and so commiserate with you.
We need an ark please. Just because I went and bought a bunch of bedding plants the weather came down, going SE with the wind moaning around the corners. I did get eight tubs cleaned and planted though.
I am horribly out of touch, so all of the appropriate noises and hugs etc. to whomever is in need.
Today Nat’s getting shot (aagh) and then we’re coming home and he’ll probably manage a remarkable display of temper for Other Quasi-Daughter and her husband, who are coming to visit. And the guy who installed our fire alarm, who’s also coming to inspect and find out why the dratted alarm didn’t work.
Nat, go back to sleep! You had a bad night! It’s early!
Thank ye for the poem, Soapy; hope you’re feeling better this morning.
Good morning all; up and caffeinating here and ready to leave for work. laughs Oh boy, I tell ya, the prospect of retirement looks -really- good some days … especially on Mondays!
Morning all. Instead of chocolate I have brought **strawberries ** today. Bought from a local fete from the weekend where we saw a demonstration of ducks being herded by sheepdogs - very cute!
I have a touch of the lurgy so am going home at midday. Nice thing about this job is being able to take leave like that without a lot of hassle. I think I will take myself to bed with the laptop and a supply of strawberries…
