I’d like to suggest a separate forum called The Wall of Fame. This would be for posting death announcements for Dopers. We could then honor the deceased member in that forum, and his/her username would be permanently retired from the Dope.
All usernames are permanently retired once they’re used, but when a member dies, his or her status is changed to permanent sabbatical, so they retain membership status after their subscriptions run out for example.
It seems this would be just another forum that doesn’t get read very much. Since Dopers (thankfully) don’t seem to be dying off on a weekly basis, updates to the forum will be few and far between. As a consequence, few people would be following the forum so death announcements would wind up being cross-posted to the more trafficked MPSIMS anyway.
Right, but with a subforum that’s not so much of a problem. These announcements could be posted in MPSIMS (or shared) and then moved into the memorial subforum.
We’ve been discussing this most of the day and I think we’ve got it worked out. In a few minutes I’ll post a sticky with links to the memorial threads for all the Dopers who we know for a fact are deceased. I’ve included a few words about some of the posters, but others were mostly active before my time or I just didn’t know very well, so in those cases, please PM me suggestions for anything you think I might want to include.
Holy Moly! That’s where I know the name from.:smack: I recently met a Canadian here in Bangkok named David Simmons. I kept wondering if I’d met him before, because his name seemed so familiar.
The suggestion was for a forum for the dead, not a dead forum.
(Incidentally, this was a great idea, Clothahump. Now don’t ever say I never praised you for something. ;))
