A key question is, are they still effective at being non-stick? The non-stick surface on some of the lower quality ones deteriorates over a few years.
I’m sure opinions may vary but my rule of thumb is to avoid putting any non-stick cookware in the dishwasher, on the basis that the harsh detergent may, over time, affect the non-stick surface. Whether this is absolutely necessary I cannot say, but my two old non-stick frying pans are still in perfect non-stick condition. One of them is a T-Fal generally used only for frying eggs in butter and precooked bacon, and I do nothing more than run hot water over it and wipe it down with paper towels.
The other one is from IKEA and is deeper, with a glass top. That one I use for miscellaneous frying. Because messy oils are involved and food residue sometimes gets left behind, that one I hand-wash with a bit of Dawn dish detergent, rinse, and paper-towel dry.
None of them ever goes in the dishwasher. Whether that’s what contributed to their longevity I cannot say, but they’re still as good as new. Fried eggs slide right off the T-Fal.
ETA: Just noticed @nelliebly’s post above suggesting not to put nonstick cookware in the dishwasher. Based on my limited experience, I concur.
I tend to forget that folks in your part of the world don’t really have snakes in the wild and might not know how impressive they are. One time I was hanging out on our back porch when I heard a big ruckus happening by the Thrasher nest. Said nest was in the climbing roses, about 3 meters off the ground.
When I got close enough to look, a kingsnake was slithering down the roses has fast as it could (which was really fast, it was one scared snake) with both the Thrashers in hot pursuit.
They got it in a corner and one of it would dance around with outspread wings BIG BIRD BIG BIRD!!! and the other one would run around behind the snake and peck at the bloody tip of it’s tail. I took some snake and bird pic and then grabbed a rake and took snake to safety while the birds inspected very leaf and twig on the roses.*
We have a 6 ft high brick wall on one side of our property and I see snakes stretched out on top of the warm bricks sunning themselves on a regular basis.
This morning I saw a roadrunner strolling around our back yard. Roadrunners eat insects, rodents, small birds and snakes. I’m trying to convince myself that the Roadrunner was hoping to find a mouse and not a snake. It is too early for the snakes to be awake, but I like having pointless things to worry about.
You must be so proud, as well you should be. You did good!
WHAT!!! How could this possibly have happened?!? Poor Polar, you should consider yourselves lucky to not have animal control come out on abuse charges!!!
Our cats get hairball treats after I clean up dinner. If I forget to dispense them before going back to my stitching, our Grumpy Old Cat tells us all about it and despite not speaking cat…I’m sure he isn’t being very polite.
Waves at metal mouse, I’m glad you are having a good time!
This. Also use this advice if you are only keeping a book for one pattern. I haven’t quite broken my tsundoku habit but scanning patterns has helped somewhat.
Oh, gosh, look at what he’s making you do and after you went out of your way to make him a nice dinner! How do you ever survive the abuse?
And once again, we are in violent agreement! Our hands know the good stuff, we have been doing our thing long enough to be able to instinctively know if something feels right.
Today was a surplus produce day and we were pretty unimpressed to be honest. We are NOT ungrateful but some times they give us really nice stuff and sometimes it is mostly close to expiring processed foods. LWT got most of our box, we don’t eat chips or breakfast cereal or packaged cookies.
LWT is now working part time at the junction. It gets her out of the house for a while and helps their finances. Man With Twins still doesn’t have a leg and probably won’t for a couple more months because of supply chain issues.
LWT’s kinda upset us today because she wasted some of her first pay check on gormet cat treats for us. Of course we thanked her, but privately bitched about how she should have spent that money on treats for her family because they have been without for so long.
*in retrospect, maybe that was an Arizona critters are so tough they could take on Oz dropbears. Heck, we have meeses that track other meeses in their territory and kill them.
I do. I even had a baby danger noodle sunning itself in front of my apartment door once. I have managed to avoid the copperheads, cottonmouths, and rattlesnakes(and occasional cobra) arund here.
Well, yeah. St. Patrick didn’t smite 'merican snakes! (We probably didn’t drink enough warm beer.)
One of the life lessons I learned the hard way was to never put my hands anywhere I couldn’t see them. No more laying on the ground and reaching under the shed for me.
So I got home to find an infestation of some kind of bugs in my house. Like come up to the door and there’s a shitload of bugs on the inside of the window. I was thinking, maybe a termite infestation that suddenly decided to take over the house. No, I looked up termites, it wasn’t them. I eradicated the bugs on the surface, and haven’t seen any since. WTF? They looked like little ants, some with wings. It was unusually warm here in US NY, like 60, in February.
OK, here’s one of my Wyoming snake stories. Every summer I joined a community hike up a local mountain. The first 45 minutes were foothills. I was ahead of most hikers. I heard a sibilant sound and thought, “That’s funny. There are no irrigation sprinklers going.” Then I realized it was coming from a clump of tall grass in the trail. I did a little mid-air scissors step, and sure enough, it was a rattler. I said, “Look, you may want to move. There are lots of humans coming.” He stuck out his tongue at me. About 10 minutes later, I met some hikers who’d decided to turn around, and I warned them about the snake. “Yeah, it tried to scare us an hour ago.” It never struck at anyone. Apparently that little asshole just enjoyed hanging out and scaring the bejeebers out of people.
Made my trip to see sister. We went out to lunch and a quick stop at a TJ Maxx for her to return something. She has a weird eye ailment that
makes it impossible to keep her eyes open. It’s something in her brain. She goes every three months for 25 Botox injections to relax the muscles so she can open her eyes. She is effectively blind due to it. It was a short but nice visit.
Sister is 79 years old. She asked me if I would take her two little Japanese Chin dogs should she they outlive her. She has it in her will to provide for their care for the rest of their lives. I told her I’d be happy to take them should it become necessary. I also told her she was being silly as she is not going to die. She just got over a bad bout of Covid and said she didn’t think she would survive it.
Ok it’s off to bed for me since I got up earlier than normal and didn’t get a nap today.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 50 Amurrkin out and partly cloudy with a predicted high of 78 and mostly cloudy for the day. It’s supposed to rain tomorrow. We shall see. Since TWPTB are sayin’ rain, however, I shall take care of candle duty and a couple other things over to the church house this mornin’. OYKW shall accompany me and then we shall go to the hog trough GC for N.O.L. thus takin’ care of today’s main need to feed. Y’all will be happy to know I restrained my self from eatin’ dark chawklit Hershey’s Kisses before I got a tummy ache. No promises about today though.
The southern U.S.ofA. is snake central. Most are harmless but we do have the cottonmouth (water moccasin), coral, timber rattler, diamond back rattler, and copper snakes, all of which are venomous and bitey.
Butters glad you had a good visit with your sis.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, alas, alack and bother, I suppose I must purtify and don attire appropriate for bein’ amongst the great unwashed for the second day in a row. How I suffer!
Morning all. Still heading to the port but we should be there by evening instead of tomorrow morning which will make the airline connection easier. Still have to settle.my bill (draft beer is $4) and get my passport, but everything else is airports and I know my way around and then.
And yes, Nellie, I have penguin pics, along with seal pics and some awesome scenery (provided the camera did it’s duty).
Will try to update during the journey home, everyone take care now.
Rain promised later today - maybe I’ll be able to take the kids to the playground after all. We shall see. Forecast is for overcast but close to 70°. As long as it’s dry, they can play. There were a butt-ton of kids there yesterday.
My snake story is sad, so read this paragraph at your peril. When we lived in FL in the late 90s, we had a little terrier mix named Freeway. Like all little dogs, he saw himself as a badass. So he had no problem going after the coral snake that invaded his territory. Poor little guy died that night at the emergency vet - we didn’t know till the next day that it was a snake when we saw our dalmatian carrying the dead slitherer in her mouth. The vet kept asking if we’d left antifreeze out - he knew the poor dog had been poisoned, but he didn’t know what kind of poison. I cried for 3 days…
I need to call the dentist today - FCD has been getting texts reminding his dad of an appointment next week. He threatened to take his dad’s ashes to the dentist and say “His teeth are in there somewhere!” Yes, he has a warped sense of humor. Anyway, I’ll take care of that shortly - I think they open at 7.
And Higgs goes to the vet today to get a blood recheck, but since Saturday, she’s been pretty much back to her normal self. Still, it was serious enough that we want them to check.
It’s currently 30 degrees and dark outside. We might see some snow showers this morning too. There is still snow on my front lawn from the other day. The high today will be around 48 degrees and the skies shall remain cloudy all day.
FCM, that’s a very sad story. I would have cried too. I have a similar story about a cat we had in Oklahoma. I was just a toddler, but my mother has told the story several times. She went out to the little garage to turn on the stove out there for some heat and she bent down to pet something furry. It was pretty dark, so she couldn’t see all that well. That furry object leaped up as she lifted her hand and the cat jumped between her hand and the object. The object was a giant tarantula that bit the cat on the neck. The cat died, unfortunately.
We don’t really have dangerous snakes on the west side of the state, but we do have rattlers on the east side. When hiking there, I always carried a long stick to sort of sweep and stamp the ground so the snakes would go on their merry way before I approached. I only ever ran across one rattler and it wasn’t very big.
Metal Mouse, I am very much looking forward to your pictures!
There is no chocolate in my house; cheap or otherwise. When I do get chocolate, I tend to get good dark chocolate and savor it. However, I am trying to do my best to avoid unnecessary treats, so I haven’t bought any in a good while. Even when I buy treats for the office, I leave them on the table outside my office and don’t eat any. Once in a great while, I’ll grab two and put them in my desk drawer for later, but it’s pretty rare.
Today is my Friday, and truly, I’d rather just take today off too, but I’ll stick it out. I have a bad case of the donwannas and need to get myself motivated to be productive today. More coffee will be consumed.
Afternoon, mumpers! It’s 12c/53f with not predicted change today, and mostly cloudy which is what it looks like outside the window. Weather app says “Just think. If it gets any warmer outside there will also probably be more bees. Fucking bees”. Which reminds me that Filbert hasn’t been around much lately, I hope she’s enjoying her new adventures in Scottiedogland.
metalmouse glad to hear you have had fun playing with although I am sure you will be glad to get home too.
swampy no cheap chawklit in this house either otherwise I probably would have scoffed the lot by now!
It’s my Friday, which is good news but I have a lot to do in the next 1.5hrs so I’d better get on and do it! Being picked up shortly after 4pm to go up to York, and then tomorrow we will be funeralising. Better go and pack…
The nope ropes need to stay away from me or my cats (DH can take care of himself just fine on that front). In northern California, we do get dangerous ones such as rattlers, and I’m phobic about even the harmless ones (I don’t do well with worms, either, but do think at least some lizards are cute).
Buddy has developed an odd fondness for hanging out on the bathroom counter. Fine, except when he’s managing to make a lot of noise bumping objects while grooming when we’re trying to sleep.
He got sick 3 times last night a bit after 11. He was a bit subdued last night, so I figured it must have been the tummy upset.
This morning he was not him self, he did not eat his breakfast and when i checked his dish he did not eat his midnight food.
Emergency visit to the vet. All the bloodwork came back fine, but he has lost a pound. Vet is worried, I’m worried.
We get back home and he doesn’t go to his food dish. Doesn’t respond to treat suggestions. He did but up a bit of a struggle giving him his oral pain med.
Poor dude. Hopefully all the meds kick in and he will eat his noon food.
How many minutes did SSLAW #1 work before breaking?
[Dean Wormer]Zero. Point. Zero[/Dean Wormer]
And after an hour of tinkering, it started working. Then there was a spill in Secondary Sort, which pretty much shut the whole sort down. But other than that…no problems.
I hit Harris Teeter on the way home, and picked up [Beavis]TP for my bunghole[/Beavis]. Am I too young to get the senior discout? Am I OK with trading my dignity for $2.53 off my order? Also yes.
Howdy Y’all! Candle duty and other stuff got done and we et an early N.O.L. at the hog trough GC. Now we are at da cave. Nappage is bein’ contemplated.
Rocker hope Lager is better soonest and scarfs down his noon feed.
MOOOOOOM what a sad story! Still, as you said, small dawgs tend toward believin’ they are badasses.
BooFae I like idea of the Hawai’ian shirts for the funeral especially since bright colors were liked by the dearly departed. I’d like to go to York. Everything I’ve seen or read about York makes it seem like a great place to visit. Full of history and such. I’ve been wonderin’ about Nuts as well. I assume Scotland is keepin’ her busy.
MetalMouse full steam ahead and safe travels home!
He is not eating his regular food. I did get some treats in him. And finally he ate some chicken. He is moving around more and talking, so he is feeling a bit better. Still very concerned.
He is ignoring his usual food, and did not run to his noon meal.
