I’ve been amusing myself thinking of all the ways Mr. Bezos can screw - legally - with them, aside from burying them in lawyers.
H’m - not publicly traded, so Jeff can’t just buy the stock…

Actually, that last isn’t true. Private companies have stock just like public companies, and if you can convince enough private shareholders to sell to you (or give you their proxy, but ownership is better, of course), you can take over the company.

I will say, in the silver lining department, the Trump era has helped the scales fall from my eyes in terms of what the National Enquirer is all about. I (like, I think, many people) had always thought it was simply a sensationalistic rag with no real agenda beyond whatever piece of gossip will sell the most soap. But they are, it turns out, actively evil. And not just “we don’t care if our nasty gossip ruins people’s lives” callously evil out of greed, but apparently intent on furthering a Trumpian evil agenda. Weird.

I agree. I wonder if there may be attempts (boycotts, hashtags, etc.) to persuade the big supermarket chains to stop selling a blackmail rag?

Let’s look at the fallout:

1. Bezos posted that he gave his PI an “unlimited budget” to find this info.
2. Bezos owns the Washington Post
3. Jerome Khashoggi, murdered by Saudi Arabia, was a Washington Post reporter
4. WaPo, obviously, is investigating the hell out of the murder
5. Pecker tries to blackmail Bezos into stopping the Khashoggi investigation*, plan backfires
6. Bezos has $100+ billion.
7. … He has a team of reporters already digging into this.
8. He can hire more. Balloon the WaPo reporting and investigating so much they lose $50,000,000/year. What does he care? At that rate, he’ll be broke in… 2,000+ years.

*Obvious question: “WHY?”

Instead of spending his fortune to got to Mars, he could buy a major newspaper in every region of the country and fund them to investigate state and local issues, like papers sort-of used to do in the good old days.

Actually, he could probably do that and still kick-start a Mars mission, even if he ends up with only half of his Amazon stock after the divorce.

So the National Enquirer (AMI) just refinanced it’s debtto the tune of $460 million. They raised this money from … who exactly, it is unclear.

What if… and I’m just spitballing here… What if some friendly Saudi folks were the ones to extend the $460 million lifeline to AMI? That would certainly explain why AMI were so keen to kill any stories or investigations into the Saudi murder of a journalist, would it not?

Bottom line - who is running AMI now? Who holds the money bag, and calls the shots?

Come to think of it, this shows a remarkable lack of foresight. I think it was noted earlier in this thread that the Nat’l Enquirer website runs on AWS.

So like if these people think that Bezos is the type of person that would insert himself into Wapo’s business and to negatively effect it, wouldn’t that also make him the type of person that could make a phone call and seriously fuck up Nat’l Enquirer’s website/business?

I mean, come on. Think! Whether he actually is or not is immaterial. Its just that like if these people think he’s immoral enough to do (a), wouldn’t he also be immoral enough to do (b) which is almost the exact same thing?!
