Rather than the wedding march from Wagner’s “Lohengrin”, you could use the beginning of the overture to act I. It’s quiet and celestial/ethereal. And lovely.
Or “Zip-a-dee-doo-dah” from “Song of the South”.

My wife walked in to Ava Maria. It’s a beautiful piece of music.
We had a hard decision on the recessional, we almost went with the opening Futurama theme
It’s actually pretty good I reckon. But we wound up going a with Hawaiian Iz - Over the Rainbow.
Oh and likc cunctator this is also the first time I’ve heard of the groom having music. I was already there waiting up with the celebrant.
Ava Maria is a beautiful piece of music, but in the UK (don’t know if it’s the same in the States) you can’t use any pieces with religious connotations in a civil service.
I’m still vacillating between the two pieces, btw. Mum and I are going practice walking to them, see if that helps me decide.
If it’s at a Catholic church, you shoud go with The Vatican Rag.
Personally, I like "The March of the Gladiators " and "The Dance of the Knights "
Seriously? That’s kind of screwed up.
As Giles Smith, the vicar of Putney, pointed out recently in a piece for The Guardian, the twist is that it was the churches who proposed the restriction when the legislation was being drafted, on the grounds that the significance of religious texts and music would be in danger of being diluted.
[sub]As one of the Dopers who will be at the ceremony, I’ve only been skimming the thread. I now kind of want Jenny’s choice to be a surprise to us.[/sub]
I sing at quite a few weddings. A common choice for the entrance music is the first movement of the Vivaldi Gloria.
For the romantic who loves the ersatz 80s there’s always Pop Goes My Heart.
You’re kidding!
Who enforces that? and how do they enforce that?
We were married in a civil ceremony, in the gardens of a local Heritage-listed house. It was the first governer’s residence I think. But I can’t imagine some government department stepping in and dictating what music we can and can’t use.
Beatles, When I’m 64. Its a better recessional. Of course, for everyone I know who has used it, the answer to the question has turned out to be “no.”
Um, good question. I’m not sure how they’d enforce it. You have to let the registrar know your music choices in advance so they can vet them, but I’m not sure what she’d do if I slipped in a quick Ave Maria. Though it does give me an amusing vision of her doing that slow-motion dive-and-“NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!” thing.
My mum loves a good hymn, and has been threatening to sing some anyway!
We used Such Great Heights by Iron & Wine. It was so perfect!
So Jenny- which of the suggestions do you like so far?
And two more suggestions: the Harry Potter theme and Gomez & Morticia’s Waltz (which begins at (about :48 in this clip).
Yeah my cousin had that theme song when they walked into their reception party.
When Zeldar and I married we used Pat Metheney’s Are You Going With Me? as the recessional. We really didn’t leave the scene of the “crime,” but friends gathered around us at that point. We were married at the end of a fishing pier (covere) over a frozen lake on New Year’s Day. The title of that son is engraved inside my wedding band.
Siege! My best wishes to you! Good stuff!
akira, Scotland the Brave would make me cray at my own wedding! But it surely is a winner! Minstrel Boy for the recessional, perhaps?
Well, I was going to suggest Thaxted/“I Vow to Thee, My Country”…but seeing as you’re in England, I understand that that might be like playing some Lee Greenwood at a U.S. wedding (not that there’d be anything wrong with that, of course, if that’s your thing. Just…unexpected, is all.
).
Anyway, since I’m already replying late enough for any suggestion to be going against the finest composers of human history, I’ll just go ahead and suggest Yoko Kanno’s “Human Step.” No one’ll see that one coming, at the very least.
Nah
Rage against the Machine , F@#k you Im not doing what you told me
Billy Idol , white wedding.
I will survive , Gloria Gainer
Declan
My roomate’s sister walked down the aisle to the Final Fantasy VIII Ballroom theme, done with strings. It was gorgeous.
Actually, this. While rappelling down from the roof.
