The Pit’s never been a free-for-all. Does it really need to be spelled out that you shouldn’t be an asshole to authority?
Yes. As evidence I call to your attention all the various threads which have been started complaining about sundry moderator action, many quite assholish, even bordering on abusive. Please find me one of those in which the OP was suspended or banned for that reason without being warned about it first. I’ll wait.
He sure as hell wasn’t being nice.
Exactly.
It has been repeatedly stated that the Pit is the appropriate venue for complaints about mod actions.
And I actually did a search on “fuck+you” in the Pit for just the last year. Perhaps you can guess the results.

Shodan
How many said “fuck you” or “go fuck yourself” to a mod or admin after being warned?
That sort of language is despicable. Do policy differences on an internet message board really merit such awful, personal attacks?
I don’t think calling someone a control freak is that bad.
It’s not that one cite wasn’t sufficient in that it showed your opinion of her on the subject. What I was curious about was whether or not that this was her prevailing attitude generally across the board, such that many people had picked up on it.
Actually, I hadn’t read the entire thread due to its age (early '06) and again, I just wondered how a overwhelming belief by some in this thread that she was particularly biased because of what she’d said. The cites quoted seemed contextual (except your last one) and still not pointing out as the reason why she banned Euthanasiast. Regardless, I realize I sometimes have an undeniable amount of naivete with reading these sorts of situations, so it’s distinctly possible that my interpretation is incorrect. As it often is.
So under those circumstances, I thank you gentleman both again for assisting me. I think I’ll back out of the conversation now, as I have no dog in this fight.
No, I don’t suppose you would.
Warned for something else? Prolly alot
I’ve seen a few of these type of threads shut down hard in the last few months, though in fairness many of them were started by a user whose name incorporated numerical references and jocularity. I suggest we form a Mod Squad for feedback from them. I also think that they should have to pony up a few uses of the report this thread, or demonstrate that the thread is a total train wreck to the Mod Squad upon request. Mods ought to be accountable for their actions just like the rest of us. While it true that we are able to open threads to question the action, they don’t have to respond, justify their action, or even give a real reason other than: “I made a call.” The Mod Squad can keep an independent record of those willing to give good reason, and those that do not; and provide it to the admin as a helpful performance review tool.
Okay, but I wanna be Link; that brother had it going on, yo.
The offense was (allegedly) not that he said “fuck you”; it was that he didn’t open a new thread to do so.
That’s the other part that bothers me. It is not just that the mods do a mind fuck on us (“It doesn’t matter if he meant it or not, it was clear that he meant it”). It’s that we are required to pretend that it makes any kind of sense.
And no matter what, they just circle the wagons and ignore it. “They’re complaining again. Ignore it - they complain about everything.”
:shrugs:
It’s too bad. It really is.

If you create a forum in which you are allowed to be an asshole to authority under certain circumstances – then yes, those circumstances need to be spelled out.
E.g., if I wouldn’t be penalized for starting a thread titled “Fuck Moderator X with a rusty spoon!” and proceeding to complain about that mod’s actions (and so far as I know, such a thread would be allowed under normal circumstances), then it is not at all obvious that Euthanasiast would be penalized for what he did.
Clearly, the rules of what is or isn’t acceptable behavior in real life don’t apply to the Pit. At least, I sure hope you all don’t talk to people this way in real life.
Heh–true.
Anyone else remember the rule that lasted just long enough suspend or ban some poor schuck that called one of the mods a “cunt”? It was never a rule before. It was never a rule after. But for just that ONE person in just that ONE instance, the “NEVER, EVER use the “cunt” word” rule existed. (I think the mod in question was Veb–but with a 5 minute delay between searches, I’d love
On the other hand, I’d love to see this mysterious new “All thread titles must be 100% factually accurate (and if you think it is and you’re wrong, or you misspeak, or apologize for being inaccurate–tough shit!)” rule applied everywhere since that was the original cause of the warning.
Count me among the “This was an utterly bullshit warning and a more bullshit suspension” camp.
ETA: Ha! Just found the thread.
That “no using bad words (not just ‘cunt’ as it turns out) on mods” rule was invented in Jan. 2006. Have there been ANY other cases where it was enforced? Or was it just conjured into existence long enough to get Ellis Dee, and then vanished?
Apparently not - someone called Lynn a cunt upthread, so far without reprisal.

Shodan
Bricker, and other legal folks, can you answer the related question I have in this thread?
There is a gem to be found within that thread.
Should you* be the sort of poster who often finds yourself being called a fucking moron by a mod (posting as a normal member and not in their mod capacity) cite post #15:
*A general you, not a Fenris you.
Ya. Post #138, and no mod’s been around since. I don’t think anyone feels that the post should be reported.
Seconded.
And as many posters stated, I never heard of a rule according to which a poster has to open a new Pit thread to criticize a a Mod’s decision.
