When I mentioned superheroes who had been around since WWII, I was referring to superheroes in general, not just Marvel characters…
And again on Wolvie’s “attraction” to young girls - I meant to mention it in my OP, but it’s also pretty clear that he’s a big fan of Asian women, who are notable for looking - to Westerners - much younger than they actually are.
(Example: I was at a Seattle Mariners game last year, with my 26-year-old sister. Between the Mariners and the Yankees, there were three Japanese players on the field [Suzuki, Hasegawa and Matsui], and that tends to bring the Japanese fans out to the ballpark. I was appreciatively observing a pair of attractive young Japanese women. My sister elbowed me in the ribs and said, “They’re thirteen!”. I said, “No, they’re not.” A few minutes later we saw them presenting I.D. and buying beer from a vendor. I said, “See, I told you…”)
But none of the Asian women that he’s been involved with that I can think of look particularly young. Which, given that they were drawn by Western artists who probably drew the characters to match their ages, isn’t that surprising.
I can remember reading somewhere before Origin came out they were thinking of revealing him as being immortal, along the lines of Apocalypse, although the good counterpart to his evil.
Could have been just fanboy conjecture though, it was a few years back. Bub.
Yeah, I’m pretty sure Otto meant Yukio as “the lunatic Japanese assassin who got her hooks into Storm for a while too.” Lady Deathstryke in the comics was never portrayed as a hottie like Kelly Hu in the X2 movie.
I read about her in one of the X-Men Essentials B&W collections, so this may have been around the late '70s or early '80s. Yukio appeared around the time Storm got her mohawk and Wolverine was supposed to marry Mariko Yoshida, but she left him at the altar. Yukio was wild and crazy and devil-may-care, and became a major influence on Storm, who was having problems with her powers at the time.
Was this before the Storm, Queen of the Morlocks, period, or after? Because that’s the one storyline I remember best for her from that era. That and the romance with Forge.
Question for people more versed in comics than me:
I understadn the Apocolypse was the first mutant, yes? (He appeared in ancient Egypt, right?)
Is Wolverine the second mutant? Or are there any stories/characters from a time between Apocolypse?
Also when I raad origins, I got the distinct impression that the other kid in it (Dog, I think his name was (or at least his nickname) son of Logan (not wolverine, Logan the gardener)) is suppossed to be sabertooth. Was this ever confirmed? i don’t recall origins saying yes or no, but there is one scene where Dog finds Wolverine at the mining camp and fights him. There is one panel where dog is flying at wolverine, or something, and the way he was drawn (especially the look on his afce) reminded me very much of Sabertooth. I know sabertooth has healing properties, too, so it’s possible he was also fro mthe same time period, and it helps to explain the deep rooted hatred they have for each other.
Bear in mind, this is from a guy that has not collected comics in ages, so i don’t know what has been ret-conned in.
Wolverine hates Sabretooth because he believes tat ST killed (maybe raped) his one true love, Silver Fox.
As for the women…Wolverine has been associated with pretty much every one of them, mostly because he’s a master of hand to hand combat and self-defense …he’s responsible for training almost every one of the women on the team(Storm, Jean, Kitty, Jubilee, Rogue), and i imagine that forms some strong bonds.
Plus, I’ve no doubt he throws off some killer pheromones as part of his ‘animal’ nature.
Yeah, I meant Yukio; couldn’t remember her name. The one that got Storm to go all punk. The team was in space for an extended period and the long absence from Earth broke some bond that Ororo had with the planet. She was all out of balance and whatever so she got wild and crazy with Yukio. Shortly after that she got de-powered by Forge’s power dampener gun, and shortly after that IIRC is when she became Morlock leader.
On the DC side, I know the original Flash and Green Lantern are still kicking around. Although GL is now calling himself Sentinel.
GL’s ring keeps him active and I guess the Flash’s longevity has something to do with his powers.
The rest of the JSA has been sent to rest as far as I know. Most of them have had silver age/and or modern age successors.
Of course there are several heroes from that era who have been retconed so that they weren’t active back then. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman to name a few.
For the truly long lived, there’s Dr. Occult who is considered (by some, it’s debateable) to be the first costumed hero in comics. He’s also pops his head up every once in a while. His magic keeps him young.
