I have:
A large collection of mp3s (all acquired through legal means)
A desktop running Windows XP Pro SP2, with simple file-sharing turned off
A laptop running Windows XP Media Center Edition (the bastard lovechild OS of XP Pro and Home, has the file-sharing capacities of Pro), with simple file-sharing turned on
A home network (a workgroup)
And a strong desire to keep the same music collection on both computers.
I also have a particularly frustrating issue that prevents me from doing this conveniently! See, when I try to transfer files from one computer to the other, I often encounter “access denied” errors. Sometimes they’re just on particular songs, sometimes it’s an entire share.
Often, I can get around this by accessing the files from the computer of origin - but if that was the way I wanted to do it, I would’ve done so in the first place. And sometimes, like right now, even that doesn’t work - I can’t access the destination share from the origin computer (although I am able to access other shares on the destination computer). Restarting one or both computers seems to fix the thing with the shares, although not with the individual files (I don’t think).
I’m not a dumb person! I’m actually very good with computers, and even work in computer repair. But networking has never been my strong suit, and this problem has me flat-out stumped - and not to mention, frustrated as all hell. It’s been going on for a while, and not just with music-type files, although they’re the ones I transfer most often so the problem happens more. I know I’ve taken troubleshooting steps in the past, but I don’t remember at this point what they were, so really I’m open to any suggestions anyone might have.
