I have two Vista computers and a new Win7 computer. For some unknown reason the Win7 refuses to share it’s files/folders.
7 can see/read/write everything that’s shared on the vista computers. Vista computers can see/read/write between themselves just fine
The Vista computers can see the folders that 7 is sharing, but when I try to click on them I get an error “Windows cannot access [\computer\folder] Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click diagnose. Error code 0x80070005 Access is denied”
Clicking diagnose just tells me that my user account is denied.
Also, there are no firewalls in place on either of the computers, and every permission I can find on 7 to allow other computers to access it aren’t working.
I just went through something similar with a Win7 and XP combination. I didn’t finish an exhaustive test of combinations of factors, but what I found was that having the (exact) same username and password on both machines AND making sure the user had an administrator account type on both machines allowed access.
Again, not a Vista combo, but maybe it’s enough to help.
Actually, I was just coming back to report that I did that and had some success. I can now work with some of the files on the Win7 computer, namely the ones under my user account. What I’m looking for is full 100% access to the Win7 computer. Throughout the day I need to give the person using the Win7 computer a file for something or other and it’s easiest when I can just drop it right on their desktop.
Okay, I think I (sort of) got it. After adding my username/pw to the Win7 computer I get limited access. By then logging into the other account, navigating to the folder I wanted to share (in this case, the desktop) and then clicking on “Share With” at the top I could add my username and give it full permission. What was odd is that adding “Everyone” to the list didn’t work and before I had my user account on that computer some of the settings weren’t even available.
I miss the days of simply having to enable file and print sharing and that was it.
