Jodie Foster is apparently great buddies with Mel Gibson and cast him in ‘The Beaver’ in 2011. It was an enormous bomb, I’m glad to say…Gibson has wormed his way back in to the business, despicable as he is. As long as he makes someone a buck, he will do fine. He is good at what he does. Men can do any appalling thing and grow old and ugly and they will do fine in show biz, as long as they make money… Jodie Foster’s day is done, AFAIK. I don’t care what she does or says.
Yeah, Cruise is a Scientology nut, but so is Travolta, Elizabeth Moss, Giovanni Ribisi, and others. They still make some good footage, and I can set that aside somewhat.
Never heard of it.
Oh yes, Will Smith. I liked him and the characters he portrayed and how he portrayed them. But then he pulled that shit on Chris Rock at the Oscars. What a total jerk. And what’s worse, his half assed weak attempt at an apology was very lame.
Asshole.
Voight recently called for Joe Biden’s impeachment, claiming that Biden has taken “down our morals, our true gift of the land of the free.”
This from the guy who owes his acting career to his first big role, playing a male prostitute in “Midnight Cowboy.”
No, Voight’s on my list, along with Mel Gibson, and has been for quite some time.
Incidentally, Voight played an unrepentant Nazi, in the stage version of “The Sound of Music.”
I will always love Jon Voight regardless of his politics (which I definitely don’t agree with.) I remember when he first started to become outspoken about politics - it was during the Obama years, and it seemingly came out of nowhere. Initially he seemed to be singularly fixated on Israel and constantly criticized Obama for supposedly not being pro-Israel enough. I thought this was odd because Voight isn’t Jewish or an evangelical Christian, he’s Catholic, and I’ve never seen any Catholic who is so aggressively Zionist. When Trump came onto the scene, Voight went full-on MAGA and he has been a constant mouthpiece of pro-Trump propaganda ever since.
What brought on this rightward bent and the desire to make his political views so publicly known, I have no idea. James Woods, who I also like a great deal as an actor, did the same thing. I don’t like it, but I’m capable of compartmentalizing their acting from their politics.
Kevin Sorbo is a tRumpanzee to the extreme. He played ‘Hercules’ and was the star of ‘Andromeda’ before he took it over and ran it into the ground…He had several strokes, and his love for Trump increased 100 fold. He became extreme right-wing and ‘Christian’ to boot. He makes dozens of direct-to-video things now.
Johnny Depp. Loved him in Once upon a Time in Mexico, he’s turned into a self caricature.
Kevin Bacon played a pedophile in The Woodsman, a 2004 film. He played the part well, but that ruined him for me.
I can’t watch Clint Eastwood anymore. I used to enjoy, or at least tolerate, him until he did that lame shitshow at the RNC in which he pretended that a chair Obama was sitting in was cursing at him, or something. Coincidentally, he’s also become an incredibly poor performer and director. His “Cry Macho” was the worst movie I’ve seen in recent years, just a jumble of cliched and pointlessly predictable sentimental scenes.
Coincidentally, I just watched one of those “behind the scandal” type shows about Mr. Gibson. It had been so long since he and his nonsense was on my radar that I forgot just how toxic he is. Jeez, that is one angry, fecked up man. Anyway, I got to reflecting how much I used to like him and as they showed brief clips of his films I had to admit to myself that I will stop and watch Braveheart or Road Warrior if I come across them. So in this case, I don’t like him as a person but I can still enjoy him in certain roles.
Matthew McConaughey, on the other hand, is unwatchable to me. He seems a basically good person and he chooses good projects, but damn, I cannot stand to watch him. He was never super attractive to me but he did ok in the romcoms he made back in the day. I used to get a kick out of How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days but I don’t even enjoy that anymore because he just repulses me.
Dude I actually just watched that movie last week - specifically because Michael Shannon was in it. Overall, the movie alternated between disturbing and boring, but I can’t imagine writing off Kevin Bacon just because of the character he played. That’s what actors do! Kevin Bacon has always played creeps…his juvenile prison guard/rapist character in Sleepers probably being the most disgusting, though his victims get payback eventually, and how…I wish I could have seen that movie in the theater to hear the audience cheer. It takes more acting chops to play a despicable character than a lovable one.
I’ve heard actors say it’s more fun, too.
Still better than Al Pacino’s grunts and yelling at the camera nowadays.
Both she and Robert Downey Jr. have stood by Gibson through thick and thin, having co-starrred with him in projects decades ago and remaining friends. Considering Gibson’s open homophobia, I really don’t know what to make of Foster’s continued support. As well, one of her unrealized passion projects for many years was a film biography of Leni Reifenstahl; there’s no denying Reifenstahl’s status as a pioneer in the technique of filmmaking so I understand the urge, but setting that alongside Gibson’s bigotries, I’m not sure where Foster’s head is at.
I associate the south Philly accent Bacon does in that film with visits to Philly as a kid and seeing loving grandparents and warmth. This made his performanc especially chilling and vile.
None of the others are quite as open and full-throated an evangelist as he is. I knew they were all scientologists, but they’re not in your face about it. There’s something about Cruz’s rah-rah that stinks of a deep self-loathing and/or insecurity. It comes through to me in all his performances. Plus, he has like two facial expressions. I just don’t find him a good actor.
I’m nearing the end of a rewatch of Inspector Lewis (the follow-up to Morse) and I had heard that co-star Laurence Fox was a bit of a twat on social media, but I made the mistake of looking up exactly what he’s been up to and he’s got a long list of transgressions. I’ll be ending the series just as Fox stars as Hunter Biden in the new Brietbart film My Son Hunter, no doubt a shitty movie about the president’s son. It co-stars Gina Carano, another twat.
His shit is definitely ruining my enjoyment of the series. It’s good to know at least that his two co-stars Rebecca Front (the superintendent) and Kevin Whatley have called him out on his nonsense (Front moreso and more recently than Whatley).
Ugh, I was sure you made that up. It’s directed by Robert Davi, another terrible actor and outspoken moron.
I think that his characters have to be tortured in the films because of some deep psychosis. Maybe self-hatred.
I agree about DeNiro lately (I think he’s had more years now as a “bad actor” than he ever had as a “great actor”.)
Also, when he and Pacino had their scene together in Heat, I though DeNiro made Pacino look like a parody.
