But I, having lived in New Orleans, can you tell you that your community standards analogy fails here. The “letting your hair down” beahvior is imported by out-of-towners exclusively, especially during Carnival. Showing your tits and open sexual displays are illegal in New Orleans and the cops will arrest you if they see indecent exposure. People who live in NO deplore the drunken behavior they see in the Quarter (although they appreciate the cash brought in by tourism). If you go to where the natives hang out, you’ll see a much more sedate standard of behavior.
The reason I come to the Straight Dope, and not some other board, is that this is one of the few places where I can read and participate in discussions that are mostly free of people like you, idiots who think that tossing out their blunt opinions about fat people being gross or transgendered people being freaks is just part of having an honest, open discussion.
The Internet is chock full of message boards with exactly the candor and bluntness you feel is lacking here. Granted, the discussions never seem to get beyond “lol u r gay lol”, but that’s because everyone is so busy being unconstrained by a harness of lies. Why don’t you go post on one of them?
