Heh. Even that’s extremely flimsy. I look up and down the threads afterwards, and I’m always more tactful and thoughtful than my opponents. Here for instance, I’d say Fenris is winning the asshole pot by a country mile. Nothing but threats, diversions, and zero substance.
My views are more contentious, but that in itself is irrelevant, unless we’re changing the standard, of course.

And no, Bourbon Street is no a social standards exclusion zone. The cops DO arrest people for indecent exposure; I’ve seen 'em do it. The only behavior I think you can commit with impunity on Bourbon that you can’t elsewhere is taking beer out on the street, which is perfectly legal–hell, encouraged–as long as it’s in a paper or plastic cup. Bottles on the street are illegal and will get you fined.
FYI-if you confine yourself to Bourbon, you’re missing some of the best bits of the Quarter, like O’Flaherty’s, a wonderful Irish pub with live music on the corner of Toulouse and Decatur or the

Is not the purpose of the board to find the truth?” And then in a later post after 56 people chastize you for being rude, you might say “All of you are so afraid of making Green Bean feel bad that you are criticizing me for just being honest. I assure you that if any other poster had waltzed into a GD thread, saw a poster expressly state that she didn’t care to know what another poster thought of her and then, despite that, the first poster proceeded (in essence) to say “Hey, we were gossiping about you behind your back and we just wanted to know, you look like a dude.” they would have been pitted.
And further, I guarantee that if Jersey had, once she saw Eve’s response, simply come in and said three (3) sentences which would NOT compromise her Christian beliefs*, (“I apologize for the comment I made. It was thoughtless of me. I won’t do it again and hope you can forgive me.” ) NONE of this should have happened. Instead we got her vaguely brain-damaged little psycho-meltdown where she said

OK, ACE, now I’m getting some glimmering about what you are attempting to say. Your objection is to “censorship by the SDMB membership of unpopular ideas” by large numbers of posters condemning particular things that posters may have said.
Unfortunately, the problem with your objection is there is no cesnorship involved. Posters are freely allowed to express unpopular ideas (as long as they don’t violate Board rules). I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone banned or otherwise limited from posting due to the unpopularity of their views.
The flip side of the freedom to post that when you post, anyone is allowed to dispute the content or form of your post (again within the bounds of Board rules). Yes, people with unpopular ideas may face a chorus of opposition, but they always have the opportunity to defend their ideas against the opposition.
This board provides a free marketplace of ideas, and the fact that some ideas do not sell in the marketplace is not indicative of restrictions on free trade, but rather a reflection on the unattractiveness of the idea.
P.S. My recollection of the Ace banning incident (and I am not a mod/admin and have no official knowledge other than what I saw posted), is that the was BANNED at the time, but with the provision that he would be allowed to apply for reinstatement after two weeks, which would or would not be granted at the adminstration’s discretion. After two weeks, he applied and was reinstated. This is significantly different from a two-week time out with automatic reinstatement at the end of that period. Ace, perhaps you could clarify.

And yet…somehow, the vast, overwhelming majority of posters, both the relative lurkers and the hard-core addicts seem to be able to understand that there’s no magic, perfect standard that will cover every base and realize that the “Don’t Be A Jerk” rule covers the bulk of situations.
Hell, the one forum that’s tried to define things more narrowly as you want to do (GD) has more problems from posters tippy-toeing up to the very edge of the more closely defined line and I’d suspect provokes more Pit-threads than all the other forums (except GQ) combined. (“He said I was a jerk in GD”, “No, I said that you were a Zoroastrian and ALL Zoroastrians are jerks. Group insults are allowed in GD. Nyaah”, “Oh yeah? Zoroastrianism is a religion, so that’s HATE SPEECH which isn’t allowed. MODS!!!” etc, ad nauseum) and you want all the other forums to be MORE like that?
