Advertising decal in rear window of a vehicle in CA

I just read through the code violations document on the CA DMV website. I’m trying to determine if I’m allowed to have a decal on my rear window advertising my business. I know I’ve seen decals on some vehicles, but honestly, I can’t remember specifically if they were only across the top or bottom, or if I’ve seen some smack in the middle of the rear window. My decal would be several lines of white type that ideally I’d want in the middle of the window.

These were the only code violations I could find that had anything to do with windows:
26708(a) Obstructed view through windshield or forward windows
26708.5 Application of transparent material to windows
26710 Defective windshield or rear window, impairing driver’s view

Nothing specifically detailing usage of decals on rear windows.

Does anyone have experience with the legality of rear window decals in CA?

I see many vans and trucks here in CA without any back windows (as in blocked or solid metal). I think it has something to do with having rear view mirrors on each side. Why not call your local CHP office. I’ve always found them very willing to help with vehicle code questions.

I almost forgot—I can talk to real people in this world! :smack:

So I called, and it looks like my decal would have to go at the top or bottom. It can’t obstruct my view. So I’ll have to modify it to accomplish that.

Ignorance fought!

I put 26708.5 in Google and it said you can’t put transparent material in windows (including rear windows) except as noted in certain sections of 26708, which says you can’t put decals in rear windows except is a 7 inch square in the lower left or right corner.

Seems pretty cut and dried.

But you already knew that.
