Advice on Cancun/Maya Riviera with kids

Well, the subject line is the short version. Here are the details:

My husband and I, with our 9-year-old son, are planning to meet my cousin and his family (both parents in early 40’s and 15-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter) at an all-inclusive resort. We are coming from Arizona, and they are coming from New Jersey. Cancun seemed about in the middle.

We are seeing lots of reviews, some good, some bad. Anyone have experience with any of these resorts (the family ones), either good or bad? We’ll need to book pretty soon, so any advice or comments would be appreciated.

By the way–my kid isn’t too food-picky, but theirs are. Their kids are athletic, but mine really isn’t. We’re hoping for plenty of stuff for them to do, food they’ll eat, and a bed we can sleep in comfortably.

You guys have helped me every time I’ve asked–I still have a copy of Weirddave’s directions from Baltimore to South Jersey–so I’m asking again. Thanks in advance for useful advice!

Been there twice…stayed at Barcelo Maya - they have an unofficial website run by a webmaster who is a fan of them…if you search under unofficial barcelo maya you will find it (not sure if link would advertisement). Saw lots of kids there - all ages - seemed to be very busy all the time and at night, before the nightly show, they presented little certificates for the winners of the games during the day and the kids seemed to be having a ball with the instructors! Haven’t been to any others…food was good…rooms were nice…
