Aerosmith's Dream Weaver...

Okay, is that really Steven Tyler singing vocals on this song?

I ask because it sounds absolutly nothing like him.

:smack:

I upped my crack dosage today, I meant “Dream On” not “Dream Weaver”

Darn, now we don’t get to Fight Ignorance™ with our Gary Wright/Spooky Tooth knowledge.

OT: Anyone else really annoyed that one of the best Web Design software apps is naked after a cheesy '70’s song? I can’t use it without singing to myself. Now if I liked the song… Hmm…

  Dear Macromedia,

Could you please rename your Web Design software “Macromedia ComfortablyNumb 7.0”?
Thank you,
digs

Dream On was never one of my favorites. It sounds like Tyler to me, but at his most screaming and least musical–not that I’d ever put him up as an example for the young, up-and-coming vocalist.

Not that I’m any kind of Aerosmith expert, but Dream On was pretty early in their career. His voice has changed an awful lot since then.

Dream On is off their first album, recorded in 1972 and released in '73 (self-titled). . .

It was, IIRC their first hit, so basically Eonwe hit the nail on the head.

I personally disagree that “it doesn’t sound like Steven Tyler”, though perhaps that’s just because I’ve familiar with more of their repetoir than just the recent hits (last 10 years worth). . .

And digs? I can’t tell you how completely and thoroughly I agree with you. I actually refused to use DW for the longest time because of it’s name, and would run screaming when anybody mentioned it, for fear of getting that stupid, insipid P.O.S tune stuck in my head! (not that I’m opinionated or anything  )

Comparing Dream On with Janie’s Got A Gun’s opening makes me think it’s the same guy singing.

Though neither sound like Tyler in his regular mode, I’m thinking it was actually him.
On everything I have, Tyler is credited as lead singer, guitarist Joe Perry as background vocals.
I no longer have Aerosmith (1st album) to check for credits, tho.

McDtM, I thought the very same thing but couldn’t find any indication on their web page to support my argument.

Thanks fessie, at least some one somewhat agrees with me!

I’m not a huge Aerosmith fan either, but to me “Dream On” sounds way less “nasal”. Maybe that was before the cocaine rotted out his septum?

I used to be an Aerosmith fan. When I heard the album version of Dream On, I had NO idea who was singing. I actually had to ask. But yes, it’s Steven Tyler, before the booze, coke, and everything else ruined his voice. I think it’s their best tune. I can’t stand his shrieking these days.

I tell you these dern’d young impressionable apps will get naked over the simplest thing. A nice Barry White song or some Sade maybe…but Gary Wright???

So does anyone else’s imagination immediately leap from “Dream Weaver” to “Blinded by the Light”, with its vague lyrics that may or may not refer to feminine products?
(maybe it’s just me)

It’s him. When you have over a thousand Aerosmith tracks, you manage to pick up the nuances of his voice ;). He has a lot of different “voices,” you could say, and listening to the 1973 Dream On and comparing to any bootleg Dream On of the recent years, it’s a hell of a change.

Yup, it’s him all right. Seems the old vocal cords just can’t make it as high as they used to. It’s funny that he was singing about looking at the lines in his face back in '72. I wonder if Tyler ever imagined he’d still be singing the same song when he had actual lines in his face. (Or if McCartney thought he’d ever be singing about losing his hair when he was really 64.) Amazing.

On that note, I’m going to bed where I’m going to take away my worries of today on the Dream Weaver tray-hain.

It is the great Steven Tyler. It is classic Aerosmith sound for me. I grew up listening to Toys in that attic and such as that. It is young Steven voice.
I for one love Aerosmith.

Is Paul losing his hair? I didn’t notice - funny that he really is almost 64, though. For that matter, Neil Young has his song “Old Man,” and he’s getting up there…

Then there’s The Who …

Things they do look awful c-c-cold …
I hope I die before I get old.
