I never heard of a fractured larynx. Didn’t know it could happen by singing. But it’s an insurmountable injury for Stephen Tyler.
Honestly, it’s amazing that Stephen performed that style of high-energy music for decades. His throat had to be shredded after every tour.
Share your memories listening to Aerosmith!
At least now Stephen can get a haircut.
He hasn’t changed his styling in 45 years.
Aerosmith was always on the Cassette players at my college parties. The music is always great for drinking and making out with the latest girlfriend or wife
They’re specifically retired from touring, according to that article (and another one I saw earlier today). I imagine that that probably also means they’ve retired completely, but they very specifically did not actually say that in the official statement.
That said, they haven’t released a new studio album in 12 years, and it’s hard to picture how Tyler would be able to sing in the studio, if he’s not able to sing on stage, but who knows?
Aerosmith’s style is absolutely brutal for any cover band. Songs like, Dream On, are insanely difficult on any singers voice.
My favorite Aerosmith song,Dude Looks Like a Lady. Because it’s making fun of Aging Rock Stairs with the long 1960’s hair thats now grey. I always thought Stephen was lightheartedly poking fun at himself.
…would strongly suggest that he’s unable to sing any longer (or, at least, not sing in the way he had been). Given that, it’s curious that the statement only referred to a retirement from touring. shrug
I saw them on their first US tour, opening for The Kinks. The thing I most remember is Joey Kramer’s drum solo, where he tossed his sticks into the crowd and continued the solo not only bare-handed, but with his head as well.
My Aerosmith story: 1994, my sophomore year of college, Aerosmith came to Detroit on their Get a Grip Tour. My buddies and I came to the conclusion that this could be the last time these old timers go on tour (ha!), so we better get tickets. The four of us each bought a ticket for $25 or so. The week of the show, I start taking to a girl in my astronomy class. Really hit it off. We started taking about Aerosmith, and she mentioned she loved them and how lucky I was to be going. I asked her if she’d like to go if I could get an extra ticket. She excitedly said yes. So the next 48 hours I go into hard negotiation mode with each of my buddies to buy their ticket off of them so I could take her. Like an idiot, I ended up posting $150 to one of my friends for his $25 ticket. Ended up being the first and only date the young lady and I ever had, but whenever we saw her around campus, my friends never failed to remind me of my idiocy.
I don’t even remember the show. But, dang, that gal was gorgeous.
One of the things I find the most interesting about them is that they were huge from 1974-1978 or so, then drug problems and interpersonal conflicts sidetracked them for years. The Run-D.M.C. collaboration in '86 absolutely revived them, and their “second act” was arguably bigger, and certainly far longer, than their first.
That was my introduction to Aeorosmith and they continued to be in regular rotation throughout the 1990s when I listened to music. They’ve had a 54 year run and they’re all in their 70s (I think), so they’ve done really well. While we all knew something like this would happen eventually, I’m sad they weren’t able to retire on their own terms.
A 70’s rock band finally hanging it up in 2025. Day-um.
I still can barely fathom that they had a Midway arcade shooter in 1994, a Guitar Hero game in 2008, and a pinball machine in 2017. The video game industry goes through celebrities like social media goes through memes. To have that kind of lasting name recognition is all but unheard of.
