TAI, it would be nice to have you around on these boards. Given the antics of a few Dopers (who shall remain nameless for the moment) in Great Debates, we need people knowledgeable about Islam around here.
That said, the link in your sig was a problem. I was personally annoyed by it…it was BIG and BLUE and it did nothing but hype your message board. If it wasn’t for the fact that action hadn’t already been taken, I would have dispatched an e-mail to you directly asking that you make a few changes to the sig.
No one would have a problem with you having it in the WWW link in your profile, but the way your sig was originally designed was just a pure visual nuisance. And mods don’t like visual nuisances. You’ll notice that we don’t have animated smilies, avatars, “rate this post”, or other geegaws, even though a number of other VB-based message boards have had those features for a while. The reason? They slow down the boards and many see them as visual nuisances.
There are even a few who would rather that there weren’t any smilies at all.
You’re new around here, so I understand if you haven’t caught the swing of things on the SDMB yet. Drop the paranoia: the mods aren’t out to get you, nor are they out to silence you simply because you are a Muslim. This message board doesn’t exactly have a million rules, but the few rules in existence are taken seriously. Perhaps the closest thing to a Prime Directive for the SDMB is: “Don’t act like a jerk.” You’ve come dangersously close to doing that in this thread. Continue in this vein, and you will get banned from this board, and no one will lose any sleep over it.
Personally, I rather not see that happen, for the reasons I mentioned in the first paragraph of this post. And I think that if you will lurk here for a while before becoming actively engaged in a lot of threads, you’ll see that the SDMB is something special. And the mods and admins are part of the reason why this place is special.
Hopefully, someday, you’ll be part of the reason as well.
You can have links in your sig. I do, but mine are not large font and screaming blue.

In fact, I was told to do so, and I immediately proceeded to editing my signature……
I did not object to that.
What I truly disliked is breaking the link behind my back… that was not very honest, nor courageous of the person who did that.
When one does something at night in the dark alley, he has something to hide. Sometimes, he has some unpleasant things to hide.

I DID respect the rules around. Yet that was not enough ……
So far, you would agree with me, it has not been a pleasant experience… I am still waiting to see if the modo following my posts would change his attitude…
Plus, scan a bit in the posts above and see the language used (and allowed) by the modo….
I tell you sincerely throughout my 7 years of university life I never heard much of the indecent words you find up there.
You would laugh at this but believe it : I needed to check some words in the dictionary to know what they mean: simply, I have never been exposed to this indecent language before….

Atreyu, I believe you mean you would like to have a Muslim poster who is interested in sharing information about his religion. Me too, but TAI is not the person we’re looking for. I’ve already lost my patience with him. On a GQ thread where he began making inflammatory accusations, I advised him of the rules and suggested he obey the mods and lurk. He has headed no one’s advice. So far, he’s averaged 32 posts a day!

TalkAboutIslam, your website was mentioned in your name, in your location, and in gigantic blue letters as your sig. It was quite annoying, and I’m glad the mods changed it.
You also attached your signature to every post, something that isn’t done on this board. The general rule is that you attach it to your first post in a thread, and then no more. That you attached it every time was also annoying.
Finally, in the one reincarnated thread that I’m subscribed to that you were posting to, for whatever reason you were inclined to post every other message. Especially annoying, considering that it was in GQ and your posts added nothing to an old thread that should have died.
So, to sum it up, you were being a bit annoying. The mods ‘helped’ you tone it down a bit, and you might want to stop trying to circumvent them.
Also, please note that none of that had to do with Islam. You could have had a name, location, and giant ugly sig pointing to your ILIKECHEESE forum and the moderator response would have been the same.

This is what I was referring to when I suggested earlier that you drop the paranoia. Whenever a mod or an admin edits a post, a little bit of text is added at the bottom of the edited post identifying who it was that did the editing.
As for your profile, no such note will appear. It is likely, although not required, that an admin will have dispatched an e-mail to you letting you know that this has been done…or perhaps it was mentioned in a post in one of the threads you have participated in.
They don’t need to inform you in advance that this will happen. This is a board maintained by a private company, namely the Chicago Reader. If you don’t like how things are done in this particular sandbox, then I cordially suggest that you find another one.

And how much of this university life was at a school where English/American was commonly spoken? Where was this school? your grasp of the English language, while decent, isn’t spectacular, and that you feel insulted by the fact that someone used “fuck” in a post indicates to me that this is probably a new thing to you.
