After These Messages: Advertisment Nostalgia

I’m not quite old enough to have seen the old Alka-Seltzer “plop plop fizz fizz” commercials on TV, but the jingle was still familiar to me. And they still played the Toostie Roll jingle, at least in Michigan during the mid Eighties. (And, oh, man, the nostalgia hit like a truck when they brought back the classic “How Many Licks Does It Take To Get To the Center of a Tootsie Pop”?)

I also miss the old “Milk it does a body good” song that played between Saturday morning cartoons.

I wish they’d bring back the Energizer Bunny fake commercials, too, where the Bunny would interrupt by banging his little heart out.

Anybody remember the rapping McNuggests? Or other commercials that haven’t been on TV in a while? (Budweiser Frogs, Bud Bowl, “Great Filling/Less Taste”…)

I’d almost prefer E*Trade’s “Money Out the Wazoo” to this stupid talking babies stuff.

I hate ciggies, but when I was a kid, they were still being advertised on TV, two of my faves were the dancing Doral ciggies “Taste me TASTE me”!!! And not a jingle, but Taryton’s “I’d rather fight than switch” commercials were kind of cute too.

There was an man’s cologne (darned old age, what WAS the name? ) where after the man would put it on, he’d get attacked by a bevy of beauties, something about karate…kind of cute.

Hai Karate after-shave and cologne. Apparently, every package included instructions for self-defense, should the wearer find himself attacked by too many beauties.

Ah! Thank you.

I got curious so I looked. Sure enough, I found one. So, here’s a typical Hai Karate TV advertisement.

Here’s a “good for you” cigarette.

I remember a series of ads for Timex watches back in the 50s where John Cameron Swayze (Does anyone remember him?) used to put a Timex watch through a grueling test (eg. drop it from a height of 20 feet) and then after examining it say “And it’s still ticking!”. These commercials were done live and one time he strapped the watch to an outboard motor which was in a tank of water and started up the motor. After a few seconds of activity he turned off the motor and went to look at the watch only to find it was gone. Swayze looked around in the tank and finally found the watch in a corner. And quite smoothly said “But, look! It’s still ticking.”

[niptpick]The Timex slogan was “It takes a licking, and keeps on ticking.”[/nitpick]

You can spend a lot of time on YouTube watching vintage commercials. Here’s a PSA I remember from when I was a kid.

The thread title made me think of these commercial bumpers for Saturday morning cartoons.

Every time I hear a certain Christmas song, I think of an old Sprite commercial. I don’t even know what the real song is, but in the commercial, the words were:

Sprite makes better holidays
Limon is the reason
Sprite goes well so many ways
To bring good cheer this season
And on googling it, it seems I’m not the only one that thinks of the Sprite song instead of the real one when I hear the melody. Now *that *was a Christmas commercial.

Those ads are still around - they’re just selling Axe body spray.

The Coca Cola commercial with the song, “I’d like to teach the world to sing…” used to drive me nuts, as I could never get that damned song out of my mind.
It even became a Top 40 hit.
Then they updated the commercial, using the same song, about a decade later.
There is some special, evil part of my brain where that song just plays non-stop, and I would gladly pay to have it removed.

Yes, but there were ads in which Swayze said “It’s still ticking”, as opposed to the longer version you quoted.

Does anyone remember the Edie Adams commercials for Muriel Cigars that used the line “Why don’t you pick one up and… smoke it sometime”? I loved those commercials. Supposedly Edie agreed to advertise Muriel Cigars in order to help her husband (the incomparable Ernie Kovacs) pay the IRS. I hope Ernie got some free cigars out of the deal.
