Agatha All Along

I might have to re-watch this series after it is over. Does anyone remember if Lilia had random outbursts in the previous episodes?

It kind of reminded me of the 2nd or 3rd season of Doctor Who with the 11th Doctor. There were random events in multiple episodes that didn’t fit until the end of the season when he went back in time and revisited them.

Yes. Several of those scenes were revisiting some of those outbursts.

So I have an MCU question with the big reveal…

…that Rio is Death. So what does that mean exactly? I’m vaguely aware that Death is an actual character in the Marvel comics and Thanos had a romantic think for her (if that is the correct pronoun). But is she like actual “Death” Death, like some supernatural personification of death? Or is she just “Death” in the same way Thor and Loki and Zeus and all the other superpowered douchebag aliens call themselves “gods”? Does Rio/Death have any sort of formal connection to Hela, the Asgardian “Goddess of Death”. Or is that just a ceremonial title?

Pretty much. Because of that she is usually incidental to the stories because she can literally think other characters dead (or back to life). Rio seems way too invested in the affairs of mere earthlings to be a good match; but the MCU is a different universe than that in the comics.

As one might expect, there is a long Wikipedia entry on the comic version.

I guess we’ll see how the rest of the series goes. But Rio’s role in the story does seem a bit too “small time” for a Marvel “cosmic entity” who would be at least as powerful as The Watcher or Celestials like Ego or that thing sticking out of the Indian Ocean that no one ever mentioned again.

Hela is the goddess of death like Thor is the god of thunder, just a title given to them by ancient people given their predilections. Death is the personification of the concept of death, I wouldn’t really call her a god either.

…yeah… if Rio is “Death” it’s pretty effin’ lame.

Very briefly referenced in She-Hulk. And I thought it was supposed to turn up in the new Captain America film but who knows.

It’s lame because we don’t really have any context around who these characters actually are in the MCU (even assuming they are vaguely similar to their Marvel Comics counterpart).

All we know is Rio is some dangerous and enigmatic character with supernatural powers who has some sort of vague and contentious (possibly romantic) history with Agatha who we don’t really know anything about.

Then…SURPRISE!! she’s actually a DIFFERENT dangerous and enigmatic character with supernatural powers who has some sort of vague and contentious (clearly romantic) history with Agatha who we don’t really know anything about (other than an obviously more dangerous and supernatural sounding name).

Also I haven’t quite figured out why we are supposed to like, root for, or even be emotionally invested in either of these characters, other than they are played by Kathryn Hahn and Aubrey Plaza.

Fun Fact: In the Comics, Thanos killed half the Universe because he was in love with Death and wanted to impress her. I don’t think it worked.

This show inspired me to rewatch Wandavision and Doctor Strange Multiverse of Madness and something interesting that is maybe intended or not intended is if Lili had not put the Sigil on Billy, Wanda would have almost certainly found him eventually and Multiverse of Madness would have gone very differently.

I suspect Wanda was crazy enough to still do desperate, terrible things to find Tommy but maybe Billy would have grounded her somewhat (or maybe he would have joined her in evil and Lili was protecting him from Wanda by giving the Sigil). Hard to say.

I’m not sure if we should like or root for either of them. But emotionally invested? They are interesting and the not knowing their motivations, or if any apparent character development is true or a scam, is where my investment comes from.

They really should have gone meta and had a Labyrinth poster in Teen’s room.

Still thinking about how I feel about the final episode. Definitely liked the penultimate one though.

The penultimate episode felt like a season finale and I would have been jazzed about that. I’m conflicted by the last episode just because it was a great reveal but started slow.

I’m not a fan of Rio being Death… I think they should have made it where Green Witches are like emissaries of death… This is such small potatoes for LITERAL DEATH to be concerned about. It’s so different from the comics as to not even be considered “inspired by”–but Death’s persona in the comics is completely devoid of interest in the goings-on of people. That’s the great dynamic with Thanos. He just wanted to impress her without understanding that she cannot be impressed by anything.

But anywaaaay…

So my prediction was that Agatha was angling to get Billy to put Tommy into her son at his point of death. The drowning boy was to be Nicholas. I was…wrong.

I was thinking about the Usual Suspects.

Yeah I think I literally said Keyser Soze during that scene. Something that just occurred to me was that while Billy Manifested it, the very concept of a Witches Road really was “Agatha All Along”.

I enjoyed the last two eps and there is lots that snaps together. There is also a bunch that still doesn’t fit.

I’m particularly perplexed with Mrs Davis.

The others of the coven all got their long time desire met as they died I think. But her?

She just got fucked over just like in Wandavision. I hope the other residents of Westview wake the fuck up and move out now.

She wanted to drink wine. Desire met!
