I’ve upgraded my video card to an 8800GT, and it’s still pretty choppy. On the other hand, Mr. Athena’s computer plays it great, with the same video card. His computer is a bit better than mine, but not heads & shoulders better - maybe a year newer, both were top of the line when we bought them.
The big difference now is that he runs Vista, and thus DX10. Could that make that much of a difference? It’s smooth as hell at the top settings for him, whereas mine is so choppy that I’m not sure I’ll continue playing.
I thought it was running good on my system (e6400, 8800GT, 4G ram, XP), but when I switched to night mode, the lighting caused me a lot of video lag. I need to tweak some settings for sure.
The one fatality I had was when I did a combo and got the killing blow with it.
Btw, I created my toon on Zug. We really should try to get a consensus on a server if we ever want to make a SD guild.
I’ve got Vista and DX 10 as well so I can’t say if that affects things. DX 10 should improve performance, but at least until now, the difference was never really that big in most games.
Did you make sure to update your drivers? That might help. The high detail distance slider, I’ve noticed, has a huge effect on performance as well.
I’ve got a high end rig: quad core @ 3 ghz and 9800 GX2. I’m running at 1920 x 1200 with everything on high except for shadows at medium.
I’m most impressed by the water. You can actually see actual waves in the ocean, and the rivers sparkle and shimmer. Looks great.
The DX10 client is not coming out till August so its really not making any difference atm. It runs flawlessly for me at high settings with a 8800gt and a quad core 2400.
Well what the heck is wrong with mine then? Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+, 2Gig RAM, 8800 GT, seems like it should be running just fine. I’m using the latest & greatest video card drivers & DirectX drivers.
It is better than the 7900, but if there’s a lot of people around it’s definitely choppy. For example, standing in one place in the middle of a town and twirling around will be choppy.
Athena, you might want to try a driver reinstall or something. That and/or try running some other benchmarks on your system and your SO’s for comparison.
The problem with most of the people who have mentioned performance is that they aren’t stating the resolution they’re running at or the graphical settings. For example, I am pushing 1920x1200, which is probably expecting a lot considering this is a new game and I’m using a 2 year old processor. I don’t remember some of the other settings, but I don’t think they are very conservative.
Also, if I’m not mistaken that AMD processor you’re running is tech that’s over two years old. It’s about a $60 chip these days. Some quick benchmarks I found shows it slower than my e6400. The e6400’s were never a top of the line CPU to begin with when they hit the market two years ago.
It’s just about exactly two years old, and was pretty close to top of the line at the time (I think they were one step down from the stupidly expensive brand-new chip when I bought it)
I’m not trying for the highest res on everything - I’m fine with mid level, and I think this machine should run it at mid-level or above. I can’t believe everyone who bought this game bought a brand-new computer to run it.
Athena: the Intel’s core2duo 2.4Ghz+ processor recommended by the game is significantly more powerful than your x2 4400+, especially when it comes to games.
You can try overclocking to see if it makes a difference, but it’s a pain in the ass to do. You could write an email to the game developpers or check out the AOC forums for advice on settings to try to make it better.
Or you can spend a lot of money and get a new mobo+cpu. I wouldn’t recommend it yet.
hmmm SystemRequirementsLab.con tells me I exceed the recommended requirements in all areas except OS (they claim that Vista is recommended, but according to the box it’s not).
Regardless, maybe that is the issue. I’ll probably upgrade my computer next year; I’m not doing it for this game.
For what it’s worth, things seem better now. I’m wondering if Funcom has done some optimizing, because suddenly I can run at the highest rez with a fair bit of the effects turned up, and I’m getting 45-55 fps.
I have noticed that immediately after you make changes to video settings, it takes ~1-3 minutes for things to settle down. Like, I make a change, and suddenly my fps goes down to 10. 5 minutes later, it’s back to 45. Make another change, back to ten. They must be doing some sort of graphics loading in the background that gets fubar’d when you change your specs or something. That was throwing me off for a while.
It’s playable now, thanks to everyone for suggestions.
Nope. Not low on RAM - I know the symptoms of that only too well, having been in charge of tracking down memory leaks on a few too many software projects.
Not really low on anything that I can tell, but I haven’t been running perfmon or anything like that. Hmmm… that might be interesting, I’ll do that next time I have a few min to experiment.
I got AoC last night. Took forever to install: copy files to hard drive, unpack files, download patches, apply patches. Ninety minutes later, I was in-game. I’m on Wiccana, the unofficial RP-PVE server.
It’s fun so far. I’m starting out with a Demonologist. It’s fun to burn things.
My computer is a little on the slow side: 2.1 GHz dual core, but I can get a good frame rate (~30 fps) by turning off shadows and bloom. My one real problem is I can’t get into the official forums. Anyone know what’s going on with that?
No idea.
But don’t forget, from within the registration page, there’s a “Create or Update my Forum Login” button – your forum login/password can be different from your account name/password (mine aren’t, I made them the same).
However, when I activated my account and created my forum login, it wasn’t until a week later that I could get into the forums – not sure the reason for the delay, but I didn’t really troubleshoot it since I wasn’t that concerned about the forums.
Any consensus on a possible SD server? I’ve seen Zug mentioned twice thus far – how about Zug? I’ve got one character slot open (yes, I’m weird), reserved for if/when there’s a SD guild.
