“…Ye Who Enter Here”

This was an incredibly dark, yet fun episode. We found out bits and pieces, and said goodbye to an awesome character who didn’t get nearly enough to do. Did anything go right for the good guys this episode? What kind of Winter finale can there be when the episode before that has literal dirt being thrown atop the good guy’s grave. I guess we will have to wait a week and see!
Skye is having a dream. I know she is having a dream because she is barefoot. Oh. Also she is running and running and not getting anywhere. And, Coulson is dressed like a suburban Dad. And a Baby? Is that baby Skye? Also. Skye is wearing a flowered dress? Did she know that she would end up with The Girl in the Flowered Dress? TV Dreams are always packed with symbolism. Mine usually involve me dreaming that I am eating a sandwich. With mustard.
Mac sees Hunter and Bobbi being nice and personal with each other. He sees a storm coming, but Fitz doesn’t pick up on the metaphor, and for some reason he checked the weather. I didn’t do a recap of the episode where Bobbi and Hunter got back together, but I really don’t enjoy fiction that has passionate fight turn into a make out session. Maybe the first time it was clever? Now, at time 1 billion we don’t need it.
Simmons patches Triplett up and they start to gossip about Skye’s Dad right as she stepped in. They used their super suave spy tactics to cover it up - ”Skye’s dad? That guy was out of his damn myyyyy HI SKYE” - but Skye, consummate spy that she is, saw right through it. She also had a vibe that something bad was going to happen. I don’t think that vibe was spy related Triplett said his bullet was the bad, so they were good. But, it turns out that Skye’s vibe (and dream!) were doubly, maybe even triply right! If only the table was wood their luck wouldn’t have turned.
Hydra is on the move with the Obelisk. They want to use it an extinction level weapon. The way they can do that is with an underground city under San Juan, Puerto Rico. The obelisk is the key, the temple inside this underground city is the lock. SHIELD finally has a leg up on Hydra. They are going to get there first and destroy the city. They will win easily. The rest of the season will have the team spending vacations across the world while Coulson takes pictures of his food. Oh. Wait. Skye’s vibe. That’s right. At the end of the meeting Bobbi and Mack give each other a knowing look after discussing the obelisk.
Raina, the girl with the flowered dress, picked up a sugar daddy who likes to pay for things at coffee shops with big bills. Before Raina can have her Chia Water (Yup! That’s a thing. I just looked it up.) she spots May with a broken face (Or Agent 33 with an electrocuted nanomask, if you’re nasty) and realizes she’s been spotted by Hydra. So she runs. And, runs into a Koenig Brother, and then another Koenig Brother. Sam Koenig (the taller brother) hides her with his nifty invisibility umbrella and the Hydra agents move along, giving Sam a chance to make another lanyard. (When he pulled that umbrella out I thought he was going to fly away. Mary Poppins style.)
Coulson learning of the kidnapping attempt on Raina decides to split the teams up. May, Hunter and Skye go after Raina in Vancouver. FitzSimmons, Coulson, and Bobbi go after the hidden city. Coulson chose Skye to stay away from the hidden city to avoid running into her lunatic father. Another thing that might not work out.
Bobbi talks to Simmons about the Fitz situation. Later, Simmons talks to Fitz about the FitzSimmons situation and it is heart breaking, and very real. Fitz loves Simmons. Simmons loves Fitz, but not in that way. Fitz has to remove himself, and Simmons is going to miss him. Anyway. Does Bobbi have any room to be giving out romantic advice? Probably not.
Mack probably does have room giving romantic advice, but Bobbi isn’t interested in it. There’s also some mysterious dealings going on between Mack and Bobbi and Hartley. So, Mack, who seemed like a good friend to Hunter, Hartley, the woman that Hunter loved like a sister, and Bobbi, his ex-wife all are working on something and not telling Hunter about it? I imagine we will have a few episodes of Hunter dealing with this particular bit of betrayal. And, whatever it is? Is it for good or ill? Must be good! But, this show has done a pretty good job of keeping us imbalanced and never absolutely sure about people’s intents. Well, ever since Ward became Ward, that is.
The team is in Canada taking out Hydra agents left and right. Sam (the taller Koenig brother) leads an agent into a beatdown by Hunter, while Billy (the taller Koenig brother) needs to see Skye’s lanyard before she lets him in the door. Koenig and Raina are able to escape, but Skye is forced to competently fight May’s evil twin. She looks like a goner and then Hunter saves the day.
Man Puerto Rico looks beautiful. Does Disney make money sending people there? Coulson and Bobbi sight seeing would make everyone want to go there. Especially when compared the dark dingy plane. Mack didn’t like it, well he claimed it was the awkward silence, but I think it was the lack of beautiful blue skies.
Coulson gives Bobbi a stirring speech about how he is different than Fury. He’s there to protect the innocents, when possible. They are the reason there is the SHIELD. He doesn’t believe in acceptable losses.
Raina, Skye, and Hunter are on the way out of town when they spot some Hydra agents. Hunter goes to track down May, while Skye and Raina discuss the obelisk. Raina tells Skye about how they are able to touch the device because they are worthy of the power. Raina tries to run towards Hydra, but May shows up and mows the agents down with a van. In the plane Raina and Skye discuss their crazy destiny a bit more. Raina’s life was saved by Skye’s father. Raina also says that they are human, but the Diviner/Obelisk allows them to be much more than human, while the rest of humanity is destroyed. Is this the first time we hear the word Kree? Whatever. Raina talks about the blue angels the ancients called the Kree.
The underground city has a legend. La Garita Del Diablo. The Devil’s Sentry. The guard tower is haunted. Several guards went missing from the tower never to be seen again. Mack is the only one worried about the legend. And, it turns out he was right to be worried. The drones can’t drone, so Mack goes down to look around. When he gets to the bottom of the big hole he touches the ground, and things go wrong. He screams in pain. They bring him up and when he gets out of the fetal positon he looks at Coulson with red eyes and says “RUN!” Coulson doesn’t run fast enough. The four of them fight until finally Bobbi shocks him and sends him down into the hole. To Bobbi’s distress, Coulson orders the tunnel to be sealed. “That wasn’t mack.", Coulsons tells Bobbi.
Ward helps Hydra track Raina down to the invisible SHIELD jet. Quinjets surround the plane. Ward comes aboard to take Raina, and takes Skye as a bonus measure. May is not bothered with giving up Raina. She is very displeased with giving up Skye. Skye convinces her that she needs to go in order to save the plane. (it’s a good thing Whitehall isn’t there. He’s not happy to hear that Ward let the rest of SHIELD live to fight another day. He even orders May’s Evil Twin to call a strike on the jet.) So, that vibe of Skye’s is really working. I think it would work out for everyone to listen to that more closely for now on. Raina and Skye with SHIELD. Mack dead. The SHIELD invisible jet in Hyrdra’s sights.
This was an intense dark episode that brought laughs in between gut punches. With Skye at Hydra there is an interesting triangle of interests. Ward brings Skye to meet her Dad. Will Dad be pleased with Ward? What will Whitehall think? Who will kill Whitehall first when he says the wrong thing about Skye.

[li]Awww, look at May looking so Mrs. Cleaver like with her pearls.[/li][li]“How does it fly?”[/li][li]How absolutely adorable was Mac’s car? Just perfect. He should have been able to work on the real thing.[/li][li]Having a bad guy that looks just like one of the heroes is one of the greatest comic book moments the show has had. [/li][li]“Isn’t that the Bermuda Triangle? That would explain a lot!” “Actually. It doesn’t have anything to with the Triangle. We solved that back in the ‘80s.”[/li][li]“Because bad guys love their WMDs.”[/li][li]“Next Right. Unless you want to spend the last night of your life in the Hotel Hyyyyydra!”[/li][li]It will take a very long time before any action show uses anything as funny as the Koenig Brothers talking to Coulson on the view screen. In fact, that was funnier than half the comedies out there.[/li][li]“Sending the Calvary! Sweeeeet!” “Sam? What are you 13? You can’t even do a sit up and you expect to meet up with the Calvary.”[/li][li]Mack’s constant evil eye about the Hunter/Bobbi pairing.
