Can someone please tell me how to find out if my AGP port is 2x, 4x, or neither? I’m going to get a new video card and my computer was built by someone else and I need to know what speed my AGP port is. Thank, Conti
Your motherboard manual should will have this specification. If you don’t have the manual look on the motherboard and see if there is a brand name and model number silkscreened on the board surface somewhere you can reference.
If this is not available your BIOS setup may have some identification re the AGP specs.

- Easiest: Try searching for reviews of your particular brand/model.

- Harder: Open the computer case and look on the motherboard. Printed somewhere on it will be a (relatively prominent) set of numbers, one of which should be the model number of the motherboard. If you’re lucky, the board’s manuacturer will be printed there too. If not, assume that it was manufactured by the OEM and look on their website for info.
- Hardest: go to http://www.motherboards.org , a general info/review site. Many obscure boards have been identified and are listed with known specs.
~ - Also note: I don’t think it matters to a 4X AGP card what speed it operates at as long as it’s equal to or slower than 4X, but a motherboard a couple years old might not supply enough power to operate new cards: my 3.5 yr-old Acer can’t. Notice that I said that the motherboard doesn’t supply enough power, the power supply has nothing to do with it. Cheap OEM motherboards also often lack much of the low-level BIOS adjustability that any good name-brand motherboard will have. - MC
Did you look around in your bios, it has a list of agp settings usually? Most new boards support 4x just fine.
If you’re running W9x on a PC, you should be able to run uber-geek H.Oda’s remarkable little program, WCPUID. If I remember rightly, it will give you details about what your system supports and what setting the AGP port is running at right now.
It’s also great for checking things out when you’re overclocking your computer.
