And, going by the helmet-cam, Ritchson was telling the guy to stay down before at least one of the punches, and maybe two. ("Are you out of your goddam mind? Stay down! …are you stupid?) And the guy kept trying to get up.
The blue shirt guy was medium-jacked, probably owns a red MAGA cap (it’s sort of out of focus in a TMZ video), probably assaulted Ritchson and appears to be jabbing with his finger – I can’t tell how close to Ritchson, but energetically. FWIW, the “Battle Ground --BGA” shirt the guy was wearing refers to a Tennessee prep school.
Unless I see an actual decibel count from the motorbikes, I’m on Team Reacher.
I hate the noise too. It’s like a motorcycle speedway down my “private” road during deer season(s).
You can’t stop the assholes ruining my reverie even out here in the boonies.
We had a few take our driveway all the way to the house, only to be shocked to find us at the end of it. We have a big gate now that is locked. Actually we got that because we were mistaken for Lovers Lane, too many times. Dually it worked for both problems.
I just can’t imagine if I lived in a frou frou gated community I’d ever think it was ok to speak above a whisper, much less let kids race down the streets on motorcycles.
A regular neighborhood, occasionally riding wouldn’t be so bad. Revving and racing should be confined to appropriate places.
Why does bigger and stronger have anything to do with it? Having been a rather larger statured person for most of my life (both height, build, and bulk), I can’t count the number of times that people have implied that I have to play by different rules than smaller people, up to and including self-defence type situations.
Flip it around… let’s say it’s some scrawny DJ Qualls-type actor who got pushed off his motorcycle by a Ritchson-sized bubba? Lots of people would cheer if he came up swinging and knocked the big guy down. But when the big guy’s in the right? Oh no, it’s a huge problem.
Every now and then Babylon Bee comes up with and Onion level joke. Their headline is “Guy who pushed over Reacher’s motorcycle announces plan to shoot John Wick’s dog.”
No, quite obviously you beat the man into the dirt, salt his yard, and scream to your ancestors in triumph to show your young onlooking kin the pathway to Valhalla.
But what should he do if he lived in the modern world? The same, says you. He had evidence a crime was committed, one phone call could have resolved this.
You got me thinking, so I looked. Ritchson is only 6’3", same as me. And he actually weighs a little less, but I’m thinking more % of it is muscle than I have. Fezzik: “I don’t even exercise”.
Do people think I’m hulking and scary? If some yayhoo tries to pick a fight, will I be judged by the internet if I pummel him? Does it help or hurt if I’m 64?
He was doing something dangerous, annoying, and quite possibly illegal. Yes, the other guy clearly initiated the confrontation and justly got what he deserved. But it’s not like Ritchson was innocently walking down the street minding his own business. I don’t think he deserves condemnation for how he responded, but he certainly doesn’t deserve praise either.
Most of us don’t have an on/off switch. If I’m provoked enough to start swinging at someone, I may not stop swinging at the exact moment you’ve determined I should stop. I don’t exactly have the same sense of detached reflection you might while observing the fight from the comfort of your own home. I’m not arguing we can’t make judgments when people do things while under a great deal of stress, but we should certainly take those situations in account.
“Had been”? You make it sound like he tracked the guy down the next day and kicked his ass. The crime was on going. He was actively being assaulted, and used sufficient force to stop the assault. It’s about as clear cut a case of justified self defense as you could ask for.
How does one get pushed off a motorcycle while riding it? Reacher must not have had control of his bike. After the altercation I see his bike is on its side and his helmet is in the road. Guess in his rage he and threw it down ( dumb move) before he started swinging? Also I doubt his riding capabilities after seeing him try to pick up his bike and it spins out of his control. What a douche.
I can’t claim to be a fight expert (my last fight was in third grade and calling it a fight is extremely generous), but inasmuch as there is any etiquette to street fighting one “rule” is that the fight isn’t over until one side “gives”. That can be verbal acquiescence or staying on the ground or whatever, but on your knees and getting back up is a signal that you are still in the fight. That’s why Ritchson tells him to stay down and pops him a couple more times so he stays there. Turning your back and going about your business in that situation is a recipe for a sucker punch or tackle. I don’t think he overdid it there, making sure the other guy was done fighting, but, yeah, the pudgy dude probably already knew he was done as far as fighting goes, just too inexperienced to show it.
Sure, that’s not a great look for any rider, but the guy’s adrenaline was pumping from injuries tumbling off the bike and a physical altercation. I’d cut him some slack for not remembering or checking the bike was left in gear.
100%. I haven’t been in a physical fight for decades, but yes, that is basically the idea. This isn’t a boxing match, there is no referee declaring a knockdown and holding someone back. And it’s not like the guy was laying down and being kicked in the ribs. He was kneeling, and still getting up every time Ritchson stopped punching. This mischaracterization of him beating up a guy on the ground is a total fantasy belied by the video. The moment you give your attacker the moment to recover, that person will continue the assault. I see nothing wrong with the actions in that clip.
Also, it’s hard to tell in that clip, but it looks to me like Ritchson isn’t much bigger than the other guy, and might actually be smaller. It’s tough because the guy isn’t standing in it, but just looking at his proportions, he is absolutely not a small man at all.
Is it better to avoid a physical confrontation, absolutely, but he didn’t start the fight in the first place. And if someone comes up and attacks me, you can bet I’m going to fall back on my old training and fight back. Thank goodness I haven’t had to worry about that for many years, and I hope I won’t have to again.
Yeah, getting in a fight as an adult isn’t the same as getting in a fight in grade school. It’s deadly serious - people can and do get killed in fistfights and if someone’s agitated enough to engage in one, they’re likely going to need to be incapacitated, or at least injured to the point where they realize they need to quit. And that’s assuming the other guy is going to let them quit in the first place.
It’s not the schoolyard performative fighting that used to happen or that you see in the movies; it’s quite literally mortal combat where one or the other can be seriously injured or killed.
