Alberta, Natural Resources, and the Rest of Canada

Oh, and Trump is a rapist and liar, so you making making vapid false equivalencies is boring

It’s all fake news, don’t ya know?

You’re creating a false equivalence.

A private citizen advocating for Alberta independence is not equivalent to the Prime Minister of Canada. One represents only himself unless and until he is elected to public office. The other is the head of the Government of Canada and exercises the authority of the state.

If Rath has legal issues, they’re perfectly fair to discuss when assessing his credibility or motives. What they don’t do is invalidate the arguments for or against Alberta independence any more than legal troubles involving an environmental activist invalidate environmentalism.

By the same logic, if we’re judging political movements by the conduct of individuals, then the actions of the Prime Minister and the federal government are far more relevant because they actually exercise power over Albertans. Those actions can reasonably be cited as reasons why some Albertans have lost confidence in the federation.

What I don’t understand is why the same standard isn’t applied consistently. If one private advocate’s conduct discredits everyone who supports Alberta independence, then surely the conduct of politicians, activists, or organizations associated with your political views should equally discredit your position. If that’s not a fair standard, then it shouldn’t be applied to Alberta independence either.

Your standards here are fascinating. Because Justin Trudeau once in his youth wore blackface in a stage performance, he and his entire party are to be condemned. But the fact that Alberta separatists – some of whom are foreigners or Russian agents – consistently are revealed to be criminals or agents with ulterior motives should not by any means taint the separatist movement!
Your arguments really are very repetitive and tiresome.

Anyway, this is all very silly. We all know that the separatist movement is delusional insanity to which the vast majority of Albertans are not subject.

The PM who was the advocate for ‘woke’ used to wear blackface, so many times in fact that he can’t remember all those times. Yet, I bet if PP had worn it once you’d have been all over it continuously.

Still waiting? A bit more important than blackface, but yes, focus on the distraction while still denigrating people with no proof.

Name them. And then I’ll name Michael Ma and the lack of clarity on which MPs have been influenced by the Chinese.

But you still can’t address why this is so. Only that people are insane. 195 countries in the world. I guess 194 of them are insane for not joining Canada.

Looks like a 2nd judge has extended the order to freeze Rath’s assets:

‘There is also a real risk that the respondents have been actively taking steps and will continue to take steps to frustrate the process of locating the missing money,’ Justice Gill said

" Court of King’s Bench Justice John Gill granted the new order on Wednesday, following a similar temporary order that was granted by a different judge last Friday. "

Ah, but Rath is just a regular citizen, and we should not judge the movement by a random guy right?

Jeff Rath is a Canadian lawyer and political activist, best known as the co-founder and leader of the Alberta Prosperity Project, a far-right separatist movement advocating for Alberta’s independence. At a news conference in May 2025, Rath (Lawyer for the Alberta Prosperity Project) released the referendum question on independence from Canada that it will petition to get in front of provincial voters. Rath was the leading front man for this Citizen’s initiative.

Just a regular guy. Nothing to see here. Look away.

Just like this regular guy. You’re no different than Trump. Why can’t you answer?

If Rath is guilty, then let him get charged and convicted. No issues from me if he is. What consequences for the politician who used his power to ignore the constitution and violate people’s rights?

Will you ever address the issues that Albertans are upset about? The independents are not the only ones who want those issues resolved, they’re just the most vocal at the moment.

Why do you keep going on and on and on about this as if you had some kind of winning argument?

The answer to the question is “no”. The “protests” got completely out of hand and resulted in major civil disruptions to the community. Over 200 criminal charges, out of more than 533 total charges laid, resulted in convictions. The majority of these individuals pleaded guilty or were found guilty of mischief, disobeying court orders, and obstructing police. Many went to jail, and deservedly so. Not every disruptive mob action is always defensible as a legitimate exercise of rights, and certainly not when it extends to criminality.

This makes no sense whatsoever. It’s just a personal attack.

You are wrong like you are wrong about so many other things.

The judicial decisions regarding the handling of the protests include:

  • The Initial Federal Court Ruling: In 2024, Justice Richard G. Mosley determined that the government’s actions—including the freezing of protesters’ bank accounts and declaring areas no-go zones—were unreasonable and overstepped legal limits.
  • The Appeal Decision: The Federal Court of Appeal upheld the initial ruling, determining that the government did not meet the strict legal threshold required to invoke the Emergencies Act.

Federal court of appeal ruling

  • The decision to invoke the Emergencies Act was unreasonable and ultra vires.
  • The Regulations infringed paragraph 2(b)’s freedom of expression.
  • The Order infringed section 8’s right against unreasonable search and seizure.

And this ‘far right’ (did I get that right? Anyone who disagrees is far right?) organization says the Federal government is trying to broaden the scope of the emergencies act for future use

And this other far-right one: Carney government asks Supreme Court of Canada to overturn Emergencies Act ruling - Canadian Constitution Foundation

And yet another far-right objector (fucking nazis!): Emergencies Act Case: CCLA Claims Historic Victory at the Federal Court of Appeal - CCLA

So, should I judge all Liberals because Trudeau and his cabinet did this? Or just the ones who didn’t tell him to resign in disgrace like he and his cabinet should have? Or should I judge all the people who re-elected said government even if it has a different leader?

Or, should I say that any country that allows a leader to violate the rights of its citizens is not a country that we should continue to support and if we have the chance we should separate and, hopefully, do better? Because it is apparent that the population who supports this mob, not a party, a party should have principals that it upholds, the first and foremost principal should be the constitution.

Trump thinks he won and won’t admit he lost, you support a human right’s violator by not acknowledging that he in fact violated people’s rights. If you can say that Rath is representative of the Independence movement, then I rightly can use Trudeau and his actions, or anyone else for that matter, as representative of what Canada has become saying we want no more part of it anymore. What is so hard to understand? You’re not a stupid person. I know you aren’t. You annoy the hell out of me, but that is my problem, not yours.

So, there weren’t hundreds of convictions in the trucker case due to the unruly mob completely disrupting the lives of Ottawa citizens just trying to live their peaceful lives, including dozens of criminal convictions for those disruptions that persisted over the course of three weeks? Tamara Lich and Chris Barber weren’t convicted of mischief and counseling others to disobey a court order and sentenced to a year of house arrest as part of an 18-month sentence? Pat King wasn’t similarly sentenced on no less than five criminal charges?

Live on in your fantasy world where criminal Alberta separatists and criminal mobs are your heroes, and governments trying to restore peace and order are your enemies.

If most Albertans felt the same way, I’d wish they would secede and get what they deserve. Fortunately the vast, vast majority are not like that.

Moderating:
Once again attacking another poster.

I’m going to issue another warning. Stop attacking other posters unless you’re in the The BBQ Pit.

Well, you CAN, but it does not mean that it is in any way a defense of Rath, his actions, his time in court or his deep and continuing leadership of the separatists.

It’s a method used to distract when there is no valid defense for the bad actions of Rath.

Yes. So what? They can be breaking the law AND have their rights violated. Should the police be allowed to shoot someone because their dog pooped on the lawn?

Except I’m not defending Rath. If he is guilty of an actual crime charge him and convict him. Same with Parker. No one should be above the law. But you keep bringing this up to insinuate the independence movement is being driven by craven interests, both foreign and domestic.

And then get upset that I point out similar of those who would be the proponents of federation. It is not lost on Albertans that a large part of the convoy was made up of westerners who just wanted their voices heard. They didn’t get donuts delivered by the police, they got their bank accounts frozen.

Is there anyway for posters on this thread to ignore Uzi so we can get back to reality and not conspiracy theories? Can Uzi be a bot?

Thanks for the answers.

He’s been here for 25 years and as far as I can tell he has been pretty consistent in his views on separatism through the years. You may disagree with him, but he’s not a bot.

Thank you for clarifying because I’ve seen this come up from you a few times and I have been meaning to comment on it. But here you’ve made it clear: you’re not mad about the blackface, you’re mad that we’re not mad about it. Now don’t get me wrong, I do not approve of blackface and I think Trudeau should have known better even twenty five years ago when this happened. But it has no bearing on what happens today. (And really, if racial justice is your thing and you think Trudeau is a hypocrite, why not go after him for something more recent? On August 20th, 2016, Gord Downie, at the final concert of the Tragically Hip, tasks Justin Trudeau with making progress on reconciliation. And on November 29th, 2016, Trudeau declares that the Trans Mountain pipeline is in Canada’s best interest, dismissing the concerns of numerous Indigenous groups along the way. You might even say he violated their rights. Right? Somehow I don’t think that keeps you up at night. But for what it’s worth, I think it was very hypocritical of Trudeau to do that. However, I’m not actively mad about it.)

You uh… haven’t been watching much US news lately, have you?

But yes, police can and will kill you (the royal you) for any reason including no reason at all and you will be considered the bad guy in that scenario. They don’t need to ask anyone’s permission to do it. So my life advice for anyone who hasn’t heard this before, is if a cop tells you you aren’t welcome to be in a particular place, move along or they will fuck you up. I don’t think those protesters would have done any better under a Conservative government (and again look to the US if you want examples). Again, they don’t need permission. The state has a monopoly on force and they will use it if citizens give them an excuse. If it’s any consolation, the next people likely to be on the receiving end of it will probably be protesting a pipeline.

I’ve seen this many times on a predominantly American right-wing message board. “We’re angry that Trudeau wore blackface; why aren’t you Canadians?”

Because it was years ago, it was a youthful indiscretion, it was years ago, it was ill-advised, it was years ago, and he was stupid then, and while he remains stupid, he hasn’t done it in what? Thirty years, before he got into politics, I’d guess.

It was too many years ago, and nobody cares any more, except American right-wingers. Give it a rest. What’s the next thing? Justin Trudeau is the love child of Margaret Trudeau and Fidel Castro? That one gets a lot of traction in American RWNJ circles.

Justin Trudeau is history. Leave him there.
