How does one go about disabling the onboard sound for the Intel 440bx MB?
HP Kayak
PII 333MHZ
190 Mram
I want to add a sound card (SBPC16) or get the onboard sound to work. It has not worked since I`ve owned it. How can I check the bios to see if the thing is enabled for sound?
Intel does not offer support for this MB anymore. I need to get some archived info or experienced help. I`ve been searching the net for a couple of days to no avail.
Are you saying that you don’t know how to get into the BIOS setup for this MOBO? The bootup usually tells you what key to hit to enter BIOS setup (usually [F1], or [Del]). Once there look for a menu for advanced settings or maybe for peripherals.
Per Whiskey-Hotel normally the BIOS would be where you defeat or turn on the onboard sound although on some MB’s this feature is set/defeated with a jumper. The “440BX” is simply the chipset designation and will not be of any real use in helping us to tell you how to activate or defeat the MB sound features.
You really need to get the manual for the Kayak to get specific instructions on this although walking through the BIOS setup parameters should have it listed.
WH - I could get into the Bios, but I didnt see *anything* related to the onboard sound or video for that matter. Also nothing jumped out at me about disabling onboard components. **astro** Thanks for the links to the **manuals**. I hadnt thought of looking for them, duh!. It looks like I dont need to disable the sound, just add the PCI card and it should take care of it. No wonder I couldnt find anything about disabling the onboard sound, I probably dont need to. The soundcard I have (soundblaster pc16) said onboard sound MUST be disabled before adding the card (if the MB requires it to be). Ill give her a shot and get back to youse.
PS - I found several ways to get into the bios, the CRTL key does it (right after post), F2 works and so does F6.
xash - Yes, I have previously downloaded all the patches and updated drivers, thanks.
Well, I couldnt get the onboard sound to work, so I installed the soundblaster card. At first the computer would not even post, so I restarted it a few times and still nothing happened. Then I moved the sound card to another PCI slot and it fired right up, acknowledged the new hardware, and let me install the software and drivers for it. Now *everything* works on it. :) Didnt need to disable any onboard stuff.
Thanks for the tips and all the help - as usuall, you guys rock.
