So there I was downstairs playing on the Game Cube. fizzy tells me she’s going to sleep (which means that I can play online upstairs, which is where the diablo compuer is, without remorse). So I go upstairs and get in-game as fast as I can.
And when I get in-game the screen is shaking. Well, not the monitor, but the picture. No computer trouble, and Baal didn’t just get killed in A5 … this was A1.
I don’t see “Diablo Walks the Earth”. But I know … I just know. Because nothing else has ever triggered this before, so I figure it has to be him.
vol has a TP up to Stony, and I take it just as he does, and then I cast my own TP. This would prove to be invaluable.
I cast shouts on myself. vol is by this time too far away, and so I plan to cast them again for him.
Didn’t happen. I had reverted back to my maces (a Stormlash and a Demon Limb) and I start wailing away on DiabloClone. He’s there in the Stony Field and … whew. He’s fast. His fire damage does … actual damage. His lightning was pathetic, but then I have more than maxed ltg res. I actually got down to less than half life at one point, but because I had him lifetapped almost from the start (Dracul’s Hands have a 10% chance to cast level 5 Lifetap), I didn’t drink a single potion.
So I’m standing there Frenzying like my arms are propeller wings, and vol’s dropping meteors on DC with almost reckless abandon. And his friend assassin is going crazy casting traps and shadow master and things are going remarkably smoothly considering his friend is under level 80 (that matters mostly for to/hit and life).
Friend dies twice. DC was evidently on the asn’s body, so she couldn’t do a lot. But I’m still wailing away and vol is out of range of DC’s fire and lightning attacks. I don’t think he used even one potion; I know I didn’t.
We get DC slivered and I start to wonder about if the Anil charm will be better if vol gets last hit. But while I am doing this I am still hitting him with reckless abandon, and I realize that A) I just wanna get this creature dead and B) having one is better than not. So I keep on hitting and
BAM
he dies. He moans, he writhes, he puts his hands on his head. “How could I have died to these pathetic mortals?” ran through his mind, no doubt. “Nobody can live through my awesome arsenal of attacks” had to co-exist, painfully, with “They killed me … the poison, the fire I thought I had mastered, the cold … all too much.”
And at his feet, or where his feet had been, lays, in gold lettering, “small charm”. I try to grab it, but the assassin, no doubt busily gathering up her dropped potions and corpse, grabs it. I am irked, but if she wants it, there isn’t a lot I can do.
We go back to town and find out why she had died so often; that fire damage, if you don’t have maxed fire resistance (as I did, natch), can be rather less easy to handle. Also helps, I think, to have 3500+ hp and be leeching like a fiend. Plus, her body was underneath DC’ so even without the fire damage (and lightning) it would have been difficult. And we had DC cornered, too … he was against a wall and couldn’t move forward (I wouldn’t let him go anywhere), couldn’t move to either side and couldn’t move back.
The Anil charm, the asn says, was a horrible spawn. 1 11 10 8, or something like that. I don’t know the max spawn, but it’s a far cry from this thing. Still, I say, “I’ll take it if you don’t want it.”
Noble assassin. I don’t recall specifically what she said, but it was something like “I didn’t earn it, so no…” and dropped it. I picked it up eagerly.
W00T! My own Anihilus charm! SCORE! ROCK! Etc. The villagers rejoiced and all was well in the world.
