All hail Sandra Bullock (and not for her acting or her looks)

Yahoo

Bullock also donated a million dollars after 9/11. I just want to recognize and give kudos to her for stepping up to the plate and delivering when it matters. Maybe her actions will inspire other celebrities to the same kind of action.

I never thought of myself as a Sandra Bullock fan before but I am now. Way to go, Sandra.

I didn’t know that about her. Way to go Sandra.

Now if we could only get her to do this naked…

It’s nice to see stuff like this. Kudos to you Ms. Bullock.

Maybe she’ll shame some other Hollywood heavies into at least matching her donation instead of wasting a million bucks on something like a new solid gold toilet.

I’ve always been a Sandra Bullock fan and this makes me admire her all the more.
Thanks for posting this thread Diogenes.

I just noticed that little fact on the news and mentioned it to the wife. Bullock has class.

I second the “do it naked” request.

Sorry. She turned 40 last year, so by pop culture convention she can only be naked in tabloid paparazzi shots. :frowning:

That’s pretty sweet, especially when you consider Bill Gates “only” gave $3 million. (I’m not saying $3 million is chump change, but you know he probably made $3 million in the time it took me to type this pointless post.)

Awesome. She seems like quite a classy lady. I agree that it would be nice to see more celebrities with their priorities in the right place.

Yeah, but Bill is also a seriously active philanthropist. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation sprays money all over the place to make people healthier and happier, and then sponsors NPR in the morning to boot. Bill’s big projects are all about bringing the very poorest people in the world up to some reasonable lifestyle, and he does it all the time, not just when it’s in the headlines.

Which doesn’t diminish in any way what Sandra did. She’s awesome, and this is a case of her giving what she can, when she can. Good on the both of 'em, I say.

Dio, thanks for the link. Another great reason to continue thinking she’s one of the classier ladies in entertainment.

(Which is not to say I’d turn down the chance to see her do it nekkid, either. And those people who think 40 is too old, go choke a chicken. :stuck_out_tongue: )

Bill Gates doesn’t really have that much money. He has oodles of potential money., but owning millions of share of Microsoft stock doesn’t make you automatically wealthy (as in 'liquid wealth"). If I’m not mistaken, billg gets paid something like $250,000/year* and many, if not most, of his stock sales have been to fund the aforementioned Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which has an endowment of $27 billion.

    • this is from several years ago, so he might be paid more these days. But it’s not like he’s taking home a $50m paycheck each year.

So, how long until she qualifies for this thread?

Tripler
Hell, if it were up to me. . .

Have any other celebrities besides Bullock and Linkin Park publicly donated to the tsunami victims?

Ewan McGregor’s doing a turn as an ambassor for UNICEF, and they’re doing a spot for donations.

I seem to recall reading that after 9-11, Sandra was in New York and letting people use her laptop to contact family members to let them know they were okay.

She rocks.

Where is Leonardo Di Caprio and all the others involved in the filming of ‘The Beach’?

They made a lot of money off that movie, filmed on a Thai beach for months.

DiCaprio has also made a “sizable” contribution to tsunami relief efforts, though no dollar figure has been announced.

Tea Leoni is also involved with UNICEF, as her grandfather was one of the organization’s founders. (This per her husband David Duchovny on the Late Late Show last night.) She’s working stateside with the group to coordinate aid efforts.

Duran Duran, who filmed some of their most famous videos on the beaches of Sri Lanka, are formalizing plans to receive donations for the Red Cross at the shows during their upcoming tour.

Jackie Chan and Chow Yun-Fat have also kicked up a nice chunk of cash, and are spearheading charity efforts in Hong Kong.

I have to say hats off to these people.

Compare this to the illustrious Mr. Al-Fayed in the UK (owner of Harrod’s warehouses).
The man organised a big sale at Harrod’s where on each item 2 whopping cents go to the relief funds.
:wally

Or the Dutch artists who, without pay, recorded a terrible, terrible song and expect their fans to pay for them.
These people have millions, but instead of just giving a substantial amount, they want to pump up their already over-inflated ego’s.

Hats off to Sandra Bullock.
Also of note: Steve Buscemi, who had worked as a firefighter in New York while starting his acting and writing career, rejoined his unit for a week after 9/11 in order to help out.
