I think I’ve been warned twice (in 16 years) but I’m not sure. I don’t plan on doing anything “warning” worthy in the near future so I’m not asking for fear of banning if I do something stupid again; I’m just curious. Can we also be reminded about what the offense(s) was/were?
Go to your user profile and click on the “Infractions” tab. You will see all of your warnings. The infractions tab on your profile is only visible to you, moderators, and admins. Other users cannot see your warnings.
Warnings that you received prior to when the current system was put into place (2009) will not show up there. We kept manual records prior to that.
Yes. I realized I asked this once before. So only my last offense is visible; the other(s) are from the dark ages. Can I find out how many there were and what they were?
And you don’t even get an Infractions tab until you get a warning, which seems like a perverse incentive to me.
Yeah, and if you aren’t allowed to ask how many warnings you have, you might get one just for asking. So the answer would never be “none.”
Zero.
OP: moderators issue lots of informal warnings so perhaps that what you were thinking of.
I think informal “warnings” and mod notes don’t count.
Like I’ve received a couple of “don’t do that again” messages from mods over the years (and I didn’t do those things again) but no real warnings, so no tab for me. I assume I’d be considered to have a “clean slate” if my history needed to be evaluated to determine potential sanctions (which I hope is never needed).
Even though not in any database I think they do. I recall asking here some months ago about a long time poster who was banned without any formal warnings (his name escapes me and I don’t recall the details. Basically he was sexist and his posts made women posters here uncomfortable).
There used to be an older tracking system. When I came on the moderation team I went through it and logged each one so the old system is searchable. There were a little north of 1800 items to log.
Not just women, and he did have at least one formal warning. At the time, the mods did a pretty good job of explaining that, every once in awhile, you have to look beyond the number of warnings to realize that there is a problem. And there was.
Was that much work really necessary just to ensure you know about warnings from 10 or more years ago?
It was voluntary, so not necessary. I had a few goals in mind when I undertook the project - I had time during some meetings so it gave me something to do when on conference calls. But it was mostly so I could gain familiarity over past history so that we preserve some sense of consistency.
I understand.
Did you update the double-secret probation list too?
Whether or not modifications were made to the double-secret probation list is similarly double-secret.
I’m pretty sure there was a warning. NOTE: I assume I can quote myself from the past here without accruing another warning; it is just for illustrative purposes. There was one of those terrorist beheadings in the news and I called them subhuman and worse, after which I think a mod pigeon holed me as some sort of racist or Nazi. I thought it was an overreaction but I shut my mouth and ever since have not used anything near that kind of language. Not even sure if we had the Pit back then.
We’ve had the Pit at least as long as I’ve been here, and I’m pretty sure it goes back to the AOL days.
Indeed, people get warnings before they have an infarction.
Oops, my mistake. Carry on.
